Well Tom's safety was taken care of by Chakotay as his life was saved by Tom in 'Caretaker'.

Good point about Torres there. Perhaps the rank of LTJG was the minimum rank that goes with the position of Chief Engineer.

Her rank was another season 1 rank inconsistency (like Tom and Tuvok), it was LT (two solid bars), then went down to LTJG (one solid bar, one hollow bar).
