Cell Phone Questions

Okay, these might be a little dumb, but, I'm a bit behind the times on cell phones. I've been an AT&T customer for about 6 years, and really haven't upgraded my phones much. Mrs. Alpinemaps and I have Motorola v3's, but they've been around for awhile, and it's time to upgrade.

Actually, my cell phone plan is about 4 or 5 years old, and while it served it's purpose at the time, it's definitely time to upgrade. I've been looking at the Pantech Duo, and think that's what I'm going to go with.

So, here's where it gets confusing to me. The Pantech Duo is a smartphone / PDA. I don't really care about the Internet functionality - I do want the ability to text message occasionally with it. I do love the idea of the PDA functionality - it would be nice to have my contacts and calendar on in my cell phone.

So, do I have to have a data plan to be able to use the PDA functions? Mrs. Alpinemaps really doesn't care about having the Internet on her phone. She just wants a phone, and likes the ability to text occasionally on the nicer QWERTY keyboard. She especially doesn't need the PDA functionality (although, it would be nice if we could sync up the phones to the same schedule so she'd have it handy, too).

Help!

Hey there. Okay, you do not need to use to have the data plan to access the calendar etc.. But if you do want your e-mail sent over the At &T's network. You need a data plan. Or else the cost would be astronomical.

Also a lot of these PDAs if you get them for two year contracts that price they advertised require you need a data plan to get that price.

I would also call up before hand and see if you can get a "better deal". It is a common thing now that you can negotiate your contract with wireless companies.
