Stage-9 was a two-year-old fan project using the Unreal engine. With this 3d graphical representation of the Enterprise D you could load it up on your PC and walk around the ship and explore. Was also in VR which could have done them in.

Speculation is that this is related to the addition of the Enterprise D in the VR Game currently out.

Did Paramount ever do something like this to the guy who built the Enterprise-D in Minecraft? He put it on a public server (though limited so people couldn't mess with it).

Though if it was MY IP that was being infringed, ... I guess I can't blame them.

As some are suggesting in another thread, this also might be because someone might have a license to do a Star Trek VR game/experience or what have you. This would be directly competing with that.

You play in someone's sandbox without permission, that's the risk you take.

A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

Editing the title to better reflect reality, as it's an open-source video game project being shut down and NOT the Stage 9 studio. I trust this clears up any confusion. Thanks folks!

I'm sorry. Shall I take the term "open source" out? I want this to be accurate but also not confuse people about the studio.

I'd always heard it was open source myself. Sorry to have been mistaken, but this thread has been a subject of confusion.

Yeah, this thread's a bit weird, like @Jed-Gelt67 mentioned, there already were two other threads about it, both of which had @DanGovier and I (both Stage 9 developers) involved in them, this one seems a bit pointless.

This is also the first time we're mistaken by Stage 9 Studios, weird considering how a lot of fan films have been using Stage 9 itself for backgrounds, so they've been aware of us for quite a while. (and yes, we've been using the name for quite a lot longer)

Regarding the open source thing, no idea where that came from, we've never been or even discussed the possibility of being open source publicly. We received quite a lot of requests to open source the project by people who just wanted to get access to the meshes we were using (which, wouldn't even be possible if the project was open sourced, but then again, a lot of people don't really understand what open source means).

@Chanukahjes: Yes please, and the 'Enterprise DVR' thingy, Stage 9 wasn't exclusively VR and most of our players weren't using VR anyway. :) Just 'game project, not Stage 9 Studios' or something like that would work
