CBS Morning show interview with George Takei and his gay marriage

BDuncan

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Not that there's anything wrong with it as Jerry Seinfeld once said, but
for admirers of George Takei, the CBS Morning show has two stories
(you can see the videos of them on the links below) on his gay marriage on the weekend. Two of of his former original series actors were invited, but Nimoy and Shatner surprisingly weren't by the looks of it.

The first video takes about 50 – 60 seconds to come on, so be patient.

Congratulations and good for them! :) And it's nice to see that George, Walter and Nichelle are still so close after all these year. Love and friendship. It's all good.

George is such a wonderful fellow. He was a good friend in a friendless business. I wish him and Brian all my best. Perhaps one day marriage, between any two people who love each other, won't need to be a headline... rather accepted everywhere.

I was under the impression that Nimoy was indeed invited (the wedding being very exclusive) while Shatner was the only one who wasn't invited.

Ah...ha...yeah. Okay. Mm-hmm. Yeah. (clears throat) Whatever you say.

In the meantime...perhaps one day, all opinions (left or right) will be treated with equal respect, thus establishing a true and internally consistent practce of... Infinite Diversity... in Infinite Combinations.

See, you can't force others to "accept" your opinions, or your lifestyle, or whatever. And one of the absolute worst ways to get your ideas across is to try and guilt (or worse, censor) those who don't agree with you. (As in, calling them "hate-mongers" and "bigots". If you're going to do that, look who's talking!)

The best way, on the other hand, is to live out your ideas as consistently as posssible. If it's a philosophy worth having, it will show in how productive your life is.

Now--on the brighter side, I think George is a SUPER-cool guy! Sulu is my second favorite TOS character (close second, BTW!). I am a STRONG supporter of the idea of a Captain Sulu series. Many of my book ideas concern the aventures of Sulu and the crew of the Excelsior!

And I like George's warm and fun-luving personality. It almost rivals my own!

Almost....

I was disghusted with the Shatner Roast, though. I could not believe that it was George Takei spewing out that garbage! Suppose Howard Stern had nothing to do with it...?

Anyway, may George live a long and productive life! Here's to ye, mate!:techman:

Isn't his significant other named "Brad"?

His husband is named Brad Altman, yes.
Yes it is... that's what I get for typing at 1:37 in the morning.
Much apologies, especially to George! :alienblush:

As for the preacher in the crowd... no one in this thread tried to "force" any views upon anyone, I'd say your rant says more about you than anyone else. While I'm not preachy, I will defend myself any time, anywhere.

Nor am I accusing anyone of "forcing". In the immortal words of Heath Ledger..."Why so serious?"

As will I, mate!:techman:

Actually, you sorta did. You even italicized it for us.

And I'd say the issue of gay marriage is pretty serious no matter how you look at it.

Then again, you use "mate" with a thumbs-up and you wished Takei well. I can't hold a grudge, damn you!

Hey--you'll get no argument from me. I'm just sayin'....

 Ah, you'll get over it. After all, I'm just a harmless, lovable little tribble....

While we're on the subject of grudges....

By now, y'all have heard that Walter and Nichelle were both invited to the wedding. I find it amazing that he didn't seem to invite Bill.

Of course, we all know of the secret feuds between Bill and all the others.

Now, Shatner, when he became aware of these grudges, he made it a point to apologize to all, and work things out. I was under the impression that George had worked it out with him.

Still, I couldn't help but wonder why Bill wasn't invited. Is George still hold something of a grudge? Or was it just that Bill couldn't make it?

Come to think of it... why no Leonard, either?

All the best to George and Brad! I pray them a lifetime of happiness.

I think the story goes that while Shatner apologized officially, he tended to throw backhanded remarks George's way, afterward. Calling him "Takei, rhymes with gay", when it's actually pronounced "Takei" (as in fly). There's no way, after 40+ years, he doesn't know how to pronounce Takei's name. Just little things like that.

As for Leonard, there's a chance he simply couldn't make it. He does have several book deals he's doing, he's heavy into his photography, and had been busy, previously, with the Trek XI movie.

J.

Yeah, I'm convinced Nimoy was indeed invited, but probably had other commitments. All I know is that only Koenig and Nichols were offered to participate in the ceremony itself.

As for his name, it's Tah-kay. I heard the guy speak, I'll take his word for it :)

It is pronounced ta-kay. His niece Akemi Takei was a sports reporter for a local teevee station here in the Seattle area, and her last name is pronounced the same way.

Indeed. He even brought that up on a phone interview with The Daily Show, when he was taking a potshot at Shatner:

"And it's pronounced 'ta-kay,' as in 'toupée'!"

It's pronounced George (like forge). Actually it is Takei (tah-kay).He gently corrected me the first time I pronounced it incorrectly. I felt really bad that I had mangled it. All George said was, "You're one of many. Now you know." It was never mentioned again. That's just how nice he is!
