At first blush this surprised me, then I thought about it and realized that after almost loosing Ron MacLean in contract talks a few years back it's not so surprising after all. Story
As the article said it's like our second national anthem. I grew up listening to that song on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada and will miss hearing it. Of course I still have another year to go before I can enjoy watching hockey on a regular basis again but such is life.
Well it's good to see that the song won't be shelfed forever, but holy shit did CBC drop the ball PR wise here - they really should have foreseen the backlash. This new competition to decide the new song sounds beyond ridiculous, like something the NBA would do.
I'm not impressed that CTV picked it up. It seems cheap and underhanded to me. The song just won't mean the same if it's not playing on Saturday nights on CBC. These hockey nights are a family tradition in many households...it's more than just watching a game...it's when families and friends have time to sit down together and bask in the glory of our national pastime. The HNIC theme heralded his tradition...hence its value. It doesn't mean as much when played, say, for your average Wednesday night game or whatever.
Ah, CTV is just preparing for the day they are able to get the NHL rights for Saturday nights. I think the CBC signed a 5 or 6 year extension last year, but eventually they'll get into a bidding war with CTV and the taxpayer funded network won't be able to keep up. Then, lo and behold, CTV will yank out the HNIC theme of old.
And then people will realize they were upset over nothing, because it will finally hit them how outdated that bit of music sounds.
It even found its way into a second piece of orchestral music, but I can't recall the name of that right now (and Wiki was no help).
Garak, there will nothing wrong with Avril Lavigne's version of "The Good Old Hockey Game." Like all of her songs, it will sound like a bag of cats being hit with a hockey stick, entirely appropriate.
