I can see why she's pissed off about this-there's no reason why she has to do so, as Leia's a general who wouldn't be fighting alongside others. I also wonder if it was also necessary for Hamill and Ford to do this as well.

Huh? Did I misread that, or she really say she'd rather be fat and miserable than thin and happy?

^As she said elsewhere, she's under no obligation to be hot at the age of 59 like she was at 26. Neither should Hamill or Ford, and especially if all they're going to be in is cameos.

Big Deal. Lots of movie parts involve some kind of months-long physical change to achieve a particular look as needed for the role. That's just part of professional acting.

Chris Pratt lost 60 pounds for "Guardians of the Galaxy" because the role required it.

Paul Dano gained 35 pounds for "Love & Mercy" (and it wasn't muscle) because the role required it.

Also look at Christian Bale's radical shifts from "Equilibrium" to "The Machinist" to "Batman Begins."

As for the role of a military general... in real armies, officers including generals are subject to physical fitness and combat readiness standards.

When it comes to Luke, I think it's already been shown that Jedi stay fairly active and fit, as their duties can be physically demanding. Look at Luke's training in ESB, as well as the trim appearance of the Jedi characters in the prequel trilogy, including those of more advanced age.

And I don't think it should just be a given that people just let themselves go with age. Jack LaLanne was lean and muscular all the way up to age 96.

I agree that it's probably a tall order to expect someone in their 60s or 70s to slim down for a movie (since that's supposed to be a lot harder to do the older you get)... but at the same time they did sign up for the part and agree to do it. And it doesn't seem unfair to want them to still bare some resemblance to their original characters, or look like they can still handle themselves in a big action scene.

Probably more of a general complaint about the expectation that she can't feel good about herself without losing the weight first.

I think that was just her usual sarcasm, in saying that she's gotten a lot of mileage in her career out of NOT feeling good about herself. And this is just screwing all of that up now.

Well, to be fair, Petreus, McChrystal and Wesley Clark are pretty thin guys though that exhausts my recent generals I can think of off the top of my head.

As with everything in life the more powerful you are the more rules you can either bend or outright break.

If you are a 4 Star general and the overall commander of a multinational force like Schwartzkopf was in the first Iraq War who's going to tell him he's going to be replaced because his BMI doesn't match up with regulations?

It's more likely no one is trying to enforce the regulation even if everybody knows he wouldn't make it.

Even worse are "active" uniformed cops who are pushing 300-350 pounds. I'm not talking about desk jockeys or detectives.

That might have been a good idea, although the fans would have objected strenuously to that, in particular female fans and the female sci-fi fan blogsphere (and by that, I mean the ladies at this blog.)

There are also cops who are very well built and fit, with a six-pack to die for (although many of these cops are suspected of 'roid' rage' and of shooting unarmed suspects dead due to said rage, as in this recent case.)

But back to Fisher-the thing about her is, though is that female actors are given a lot of shit for being fat more than male ones, and Fisher was given a lot of that flack for being fifty-nine and having the weight of a fifty-nine year-old woman. That doesn't mean that she can't keep in the kind of shape as Greg alluded to when he talked about Jack LaLanne, but it is something to think about.
