Capaldi Leaving Doctor Who

Oh my gosh; so all those times he said he wasn't going/hadn't made up his mind he was Trumping us?

I'm shocked. Shocked I tell's ya.

And I asume that's it for Lucas and Mackie as well.

I'd imagine Chibnall will start with a fresh slate, same as Moffat did and RTD before him. So, no Matt Lucas, no Pearl Mackie.

I'm disappointed but not surprised. I've heard reports that Capaldi has wanted out since series 8 and that his return for series 9 was not a sure thing.

I'll forever wonder, as I've wondered with Matt Smith, what Capaldi would have done with another writer-producer. Smith and Capaldi both have made some truly terrible material watchable.

I'll also wonder if this was truly Capaldi's decision.

It'll be pretty ironic is this is the series where they find the characterisation for him that works all the time.

Figured he would, to give the new showrunner a clean break. Will miss him, he's been great.

My guess is that we're getting to the point where the Chibnall Doctor would have had to start filming in a few months for Season 10 and that this would have started slipping out any time now - plus it's decent promotion for a series that has lately slipped from 'Must See' television and people will tune in just to see how Capaldi bows out at Christmas.

I like Peter Capaldi more than the other New Series Doctors... with the possible exception of early Matt Smith.

Having said that: Can Paul McGann come back again and have a proper go at it on TV now?

I only ask because... you know... being both rampant and full of bullshit speculation that never quite works out.

The new Doctor will be whoever becomes the Bookies favourite 24-48 hours before the official announcement...

Let the rampant bullshit speculation begin...

That Jo Whiley interview... well, it's strange. Peter casually drops that he's leaving into conversation, it hangs there, and Whiley isn't even sure what she's heard. She has this scoop, and yet it completely blindsides her. Then, when she follows up with when his final episode is, he doesn't seem sure! It sounds like someone has to prompt him from off-mic that his final episode is Christmas.

Series 11 wouldn't have to start filming until July for an April debut. (See the Series 5 filming schedule.) They wouldn't need to announce until May-ish.

I'm skeptical that announcing his departure now will put more butts on seats in the spring. More people will tune in for the series premiere anyway, and unless they're hooked these fringe viewers won't be back until Christmas and the regeneration.

I haven't always been crazy about the 12th Doctor but I've always liked Peter Capaldi. He's been a great representative for Doctor Who. I only wish he (and Matt Smith) would have had a showrunner worthy of their talents.

Honestly, I thought he was gonna stay, just to spite the BBC and for himself to see how different it'd be without Moffat hanging around.

Now, I have finally the biggest reason to dislike Moff: Ruining Twelve from almost the start.

He said he was asked to stay but at 58 years of age I can understand him wanting to move on now. It feels like a good time to go with a new regime change.

This.

I'm going to miss Capaldi. I'm also going to miss the opportunity to see how he would have done with a different showrunner, because I think someone besides Moffat would have done the 12th Doctor so much better. Well, at least it will be interesting to see what they do next, and Chibnail getting a clean break from Moffat's era might end up being a big advantage.
