Although I have never been one for groups, I always have felt proud to be part of a fandom that is interested not only in stories and special effects, but that also seems to have a spirit of optimism and responsibility concerning the future. The interesting thing about the Trek universe is that it makes clear that earth (and indeed, many species) had to go through the wringer to achieve their highest ambitions.
This summer, more than any in recent memory, has been proof positive that humanity is indeed being put through the wringer. What is unclear is if we have the will to rise and fight, or whether this marks the beginning of a decline that the modern world has never before been faced with.
As an era of genuine suffering dawns, I ask this: Are Trekkies any better than the rest of the population? Are we capable of living and acting to confront the true nightmare, or are we only consumers and daydreamers?
