Can Trek XI (Or Anything Else) Save the Star Trek Convention?

Never been to a convention but want to go. Anyway, they need someone there I want to see. Hey, they can have Kes and Ezri wrestle. Naaa

Noone has mentioned the fan run conventions, particularly Shore Leave. That seems to grow every year, and lasts for most of a week. There are so many things to do there that people don't sleep for days.

The fan conventions are less likely to feature celebrity actors, and more likely to have writers and other folk. Plus fan-made episodes, workshops of all sorts.

Unless I am cycling in France, I will be there next year.

Plus there are regional gatherings of Starfleet International, and probably the International Federation of Trekkers.

All these events have a decidedly different feel from the commercial ones where latinum is king.

^Fan cons are the only ones I go to. To be fair I only go to one a year, SF BAll, in Bournemouth, Uk every February. There are loads of events and a fantastic themed banquet with live entertainment and a disco on Saturday night. It's great value for money and a great weekend.

Never been to a convention. Don't understand what they're for.

These are my feelings, too.

Me three.

I could think of nothing worse than standing around with a bunch of fat people in ill-fitting home made costumes who talk like comic shop guy while I pay $20 for a season three extra from VOY to scrawl his name on a picture I had to pay $30 for.

I vascillate between "Is posting on a message board too geeky?" and "Should I leave before I become infected by nerd?" at THIS place, let alone hanging around a crappy '70's hotel with weird strangers all weekend.
