Can everyone agree now that this is indeed a REBOOT?

Do you think the new trek is a Reboot?

I was hoping it wasnt. I could suspend by disbelief and rationalize some visual continuity changes, and consider this the past of everything that came before. I loved the new uniforms and even didnt mind the interior of the E. But the new ship, I just cannot rationalize into OLD continuity. Its just TMP saucer rescaled with the same marking(in different colors) glued onto a new engineering hull and nacelles. It just doesnt have anything remotely TOS about it. The 1701 has been redone nicely by others in a more beleivable way. So I now consider this a total reboot with Nimoy now the M,Q or Moneypenny:lol: with the main cast the "Bonds" of the Star Trek universe.

That all said I will still see it and judge it for what it it.

The have Nero destroy the Kelvin and severely alter the timeline in the opening scene from what we know now.

So yes, they are going back to about 2245 or so and making Trek very different thereafter.

So this is a totally new branch of Trek that (in universe) over writes what we previously saw.

Reboot.

I think it is becoming more obvious that this is a reboot, despite what the guys making the movie said in the past. Very different look of the ship, different histories for the characters, and a different status quo.

And honestly, I think it's awesome.

I used to hate the idea of a reboot, but Star Trek needs to be revitalized at this point, or else it's dead. I love everything that came in the past, but I'm open to seeing if this will be any good, and so far it looks like it will be.

I'm not going to conclude that it's a reboot until I see the film. With what little we know of the actual plot, it's really hard to say. Even harder with all the different reports that have been coming out recently.

Obviously, the timeline has been screwed up in some way. That doesn't have to explain the different look, as it is first and foremost entertainment, after all, and a saleable look for today's audiences is necessary. So, I leave the look to the producer's sensibilities.

Beyond that, we don't know how the story ends. Or what's "correct" and "incorrect" within the story. What has changed? What is older Spock trying to correct? Something that's already happened? Something that is happening? Something that will happen? A combination? Since we really don't know those answers, we don't know what kind of Trek universe we'll get in the end.
My guess is they've done their share of rewriting, reinterpretting, culling, and creating the canon -- like all have before -- but in the end, it'll still be the Trek universe as we've known it. But run by Apple. ;)

Short answer, not a reboot.

Erm, you do realize that we don't even know what year the film is set in, right? I mean, think about how radically different the TOS Enterprise looks from the TMP Enterprise. There's no particular reason that the Constitution class could haven't started out looking like the Abrams Enterprise in 2245, gotten a massive refit shortly before 2254 (the time of "The Cage"), and then gotten a third refit circa 2270. Heck, if any thing, the idea of the Constitution class having undergone two major refits by the 2280s explains why they were regarded as being so old and not worth keeping around anymore by 2293.

Personally, I hate this new design, but I don't see any real continuity problems with it.

I forgot to mention. NO SPOILERS beyond visual. I havent read any of them yet.:( CAN everyone please TAG their spolilers???? Im panicking here. :)

There is an article on Trekmovie.com about seeing some clips from the film that leads me to believe that all is not what it appears to be. I'm keeping an open mind about all of this.

I don't think it's a reboot as much as it's a second version of what we know to be Star Trek. Look, we've already seen things unfold one way (TOS - Enterprise), and I don't think anything keeps that from being true or valid. But the version we'll soon be seeing is, to borrow a phrase from Chemahkuu, a branching off of that, where certain events have created a entirely new timeline (with the same characters and everything else), just the events are different (and, as time progresses, some of those might even unfold in the exact same way as they did before).

All this does is free up Abrams, Orci, Kurtzman, et al to tell stories out from under the suffocating veil of canon that has been pulled around Star Trek for so long now. Like I said, with so many of the same pieces that were in the first timeline, I suspect that the possibility does very well exist that certain things in Universe 2 could unfold just as they did in Universe 1... but what exists now is simply the possibility that some things could unfold differently, giving us a fresh look at the world we all love.

With both Universe 1 (TOS - Enterprise) and Universe 2 (Trex XI and beyond) being completely valid versions of Star Trek, I fail to see how this is a bad thing; if anything, I'm excited.

Hey, Trek is all about sailing into the unknown. As fans, I think it's important for us to feel that way again, too.

Anyway, I think I'll submit to this movie being a re-telling; not a reboot.

There really was no reason to suffocate under canon though. They could have told stories from this time period on different ships. But yeah I know, it wouldnt have been as interesting for audiences. Gotta have Kirk and Spock.

The ship and the uniforms are very believable updates. That being said, the movie itself is set in a very different timeline than the TOS we know. Whether its a reboot or not depends on how it ends. If the defeat of Nero means the timeline is restored, than it is more a side adventure akin to Yesterday's Enterprise. If the changes are permanent, then its a reboot.
