Like back in the "too cerebral" Star Trek? Or rip his shirt in every fight? He didn't rip his shirt once that I remember, or kill even one computer by talking to it. What crap! I want cerebral!

Chris Pine can make a computer sit up and call him Mama!, as long as he's boning the green chick who programmed it. 
Because of the Altered Timeline Starfleet uniforms are more durable. As a result Kirks enemies could no longer use their tactic of removing Kirks shirt so he would die of hypothermia. Instead they had to resort to the less subtle option of simply choking him every five minutes.

No matter....Kirk Jr. hardly came off as being a genius...I know he graduated in 3yrs...had the nohow and really the connections to beat the test...but I still didn't get genius...absolutely not.

Just because you don't act like a genius doesn't mean you weren't one. Kirk had an incredible sense of timing. Note during the sky-diving sequence that he was roughly figuring the decent time by eye. Or his command ability to use all of his crew rather than simply issue orders to them (like Spock often does). Or the plan to take Spock Prime's ship, or to find that third option between a suicidal attack or retreating to meet the rest of the fleet.
Romance is compatible with cerebral. In fact, they are orthogonal qualities. They have no relationship with each other, unless you stereotype Spock as the "nerdy geek who gets none." Spock certainly was cerebral as well. He reasoned courses of action (even though they might not have been the best courses of action, they were still based on sound logic).
I don' know, but since (as I'm told) this movie is just action and adventure, and TOS was thoughtful, well written art, I was just assuming.
I wonder how Pine's Kirk will deal with all the other well written and thoughtful stuff that made TOS so much better, like the space hippies, Abraham Lincoln, Alice's white rabbit, or any of the several parallel Earths.

who are WE to refute?
My good friend and next-door neighbor growing up was an official "genius" (ne has an IQ of somewhere around 150 to 160 IIRC). However, there were times as a teenager that you would barely guess that this kid was a genius, let alone someone who would succeed in life. He didn't start fights at bars like young Kirk did, but he (we) did some pretty stupid things as teenagers.

He has long since matured and is now a tenured math professor at a major university and has published papers on advanced mathmatics that are respected by his peers (which I have read online and have no idea what the hell he is talking about
). So if Pike says Kirk is a genius, then it is established that Kirk is a genius...I don't need to see proof (although the rest of the film establishes that Kirk's intelligence is very high).

I didn't buy Anakin being a genius or special, and I'm not buying nuKirk either.
It depends on how bad the computer programmers in the New Timeline are. Because in the Prime, they were shite.
