"By Any Other Name" thoughts/question

Will there be any type of punishment for Rojan and the Kelvins for what they did? The episode is somewhat lighthearted (Scotty drunk, Kirk kissing the Kelvan woman leading to jealousy), however the scene where Rojan crushes the cube that was the young yeoman, still (after seeing this episode probably 50 times in my life) is pretty brutal. That, and the abduction of the Enterprise seems to be pretty big issues that would need to be dealt with by Starfleet and the Federation. Or, would there be a softening of punishment in exchange for technology?

Also, anyone ever tried to figure out what that wall hanging in Scotty's cabin is? Is it supposed to be a ship?

Kirk has a soft spot for Murderers. He gave Khan an entire planet. Was probably gonna go soft on Kodos too.

That one haunted me, too. I would at least force them to restore what they could of her body, forcing them to watch the probably very gory sight, and let their now-human forms sicken from it.

Well, she should have seen it coming; she had the red uniform on.

I wouldn't apply for a mortgage, seeing that red uniform in the script.

There are a few things hanging in Scotty's quarters. A kilt, a shield. I think you're referring to the framed thing, which I think may be some old engineering tools(?). It looks like something that can be used for measuring angles.

^^ Yeah, that's what I always assumed. those "framed things" do look like some sort of antique (by 23 century standards) drafting equipment? Maybe you could put the question in the 'reused prop' thread?

That "art" on Scotty's wall is comprised of antique drafting and engineering tools. The main ones include a folding ruler/sector, a protractor with template, and a very old (ca. 1830) protractor/t-square/analog calculator combo:

Yeah, that scene frightened me too. I also was a little scared when we are back on the Enterprise and see a number of cubes in the hallway representing different crew members who were "transformed".

Although I liked this episode, it bugged me a little that we never hear for certain that they were brought back to their normal shape.

I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who was horrified as a child by the murder of Julie Cobb. I actually believed, on first seeing that episode, that by the end of it, they would somehow glue all the pieces of the styrofoam block back together and make her whole again. I was distressed that by the end of the episode this didn't happen. The next night, I even tuned in to the next broadcast (which was "Return of Tomorrow") hoping that in THAT episode they would bring her back to life and watched that whole show (which, of course, had nothing to do with the events of "By Any Other Name") in that vain hope.

I can remember as a child having a nightmare where Warren Stevens in an orange jumpsuit came into my bedroom and turned me into a styrofoam dochehedron.

I remember my cousin's mother was also horrified by this scene, and refused to let her children watch Star Trek because of it. One afternoon when visiting my cousins, I wanted to watch that day's rerun of Trek. My cousin's mother told me in no uncertain terms that the show was verboten in their household, and as her rationale brought up the scene in question. However, my mom managed to talk her into letting us watch it for just that one time.

Guess which episode just happened to be rerun that day?

agreed. i too wanted them to put her back together.i was also naive enough to wonder if the cubes were us minus water, could you simply put them in water to bring people back to life

Followed, no doubt, by the exploding head from TNG's Conspiracy.

I always have one group that irks me to no end on an ST show. Alixius and her son from DS9 S2's Paradise. The Aldeans from TNG's 'When The Bough Breaks'. The 'Scientific Method' aliens from Voyager. The 'you must apologize for apologizing wrongly' aliens from ENT. The Kelvans gave me my first true nightmare image on a show, tied with 'Frankenstein : The True Story' and its final fate of the Bride.

Here's one serious take on it : http://www.southroad.com/brightfame/stories/noapologies.html

and one decidedly less so :

This ep also amusingly shows how network people of that era never got SF/F : Showing a woman's belly button would trigger the Apocalypse, but showing her essentially dehydrated, compacted and crushed into powder was just fine.

Ya know, I always imagined that it was supposed to be an abstract representation of the Enterprise's nacelles & booms in a frame.

Hmmm....... I thought Scotty was into "engine art" porn or somethin'; now I know better. ;)

I always thought the same about it being an abstract of the Enterprise.
