Buildings in the Gorge?!?

Like a proper geek, the other night I downloaded the larger sized trailer and scanned through a few scenes. When Anakin....errr, I mean young Kirk goes over the cliff and is hanging there("YIPPEEEE!!!!!"), we see behind him in the gorge what look like very large rock tower formations. They almost look like buildings hewn from the rock.

I don't have the ability to do the whole picture paste thing so maybe somebody else could?

Just thought they were interesting.

I thought I saw the same thing when I saw the trailer in the theater. Going back, though, I couldn't really identify anything that looked like a building, just a lot of blocks quarried away leaving tons of right-angles. (Litarally.) It sure looks like 23rd Century cliff dwellings, though!

I would trust the opinion of someone who saw it on the big screen, since there is much more detail, although it is interesting to see a still frame, too.

If it is, as you say, just a quarry then I like that little bit of detail adding to the environment and thus the "backstory" of the world of the film as a whole.

They are hewn from the rock, but what you see is what the rock of the quarry wall looks like after slabs of limestone have been removed from it.

I was mistaken.

There is a better view when lil' Kirkie is sliding the car sideways and we get a panoramic shot of the gorge from above.

It REALLY looks like giant buildings.

one theory is that they're massive, compact living areas (like multi-storied cities). i doubt it tho, probably just really big grain silos

That sequence is shot at a limestone quarry. There are quite a few of those throughout Iowa, though I suspect that this scene was actually shot somewhere around Bakersfield CA.
