Dark Horse has announced that they will be releasing Buckaroo Banzai Against The World Crime League et. al: A Compendium of Evils, written by E.M. Rauch, who wrote the screenplay and novelization for the original movie.
    Here's the description from Amazon:
A world-class hero confronts ancient "supernatural" evils in an adventure that spans entire planets and defies everyday notions of reality!

Still mourning the losses of his beloved Penny Priddy and his surrogate father Professor Hikita, Buckaroo Banzai must also contend with the constant threat of attack from his immortal nemesis Hanoi Xan, ruthless leader of the World Crime League. To make matters worse, Planet 10 warrior queen John Emdall has sent her Lectroid legions against Earth with a brutal ultimatum. Or is her true target Buckaroo Banzai? As the apocalyptic threats continue to mount, only Buckaroo and his Hong Kong Cavaliers stand in the way of global destruction.

The long-awaited sequel to The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension is finally here after more than 35 years! As told by the Reno Kid to Buckaroo Banzai chronicler E.M. Rauch, this tale follows everyone's favorite scientist-surgeon-entertainer-daredevil as he sets off on a brand-new hair-raising adventure!

According to the announcement on Dark Horse's website, it will be 544 pages long, and will be released on August 10, as a hardcover for $29.99US.
I love the original movie, so I will definitely be checking this out when I get a chance.

I somehow thought something like this had already been done but maybe I'm thinking of Earl Mac Rauch working on some of the comics. I really enjoyed his novelization of his Banzai screenplay and thought it had a nice pulp vibe so I'm surprised he wasn't able to parlay that into more success, or a the very least more output, over the years.

So, set some time after the movie then. A shame that we're jumping over the loss of those two, but hopefully it's all for the best when it comes to this tale.

If you like quirky, quotable movies it's worth a shot but may not to be everyone's tastes. It's kind of what a science fiction movie from Wes Anderson might be like. Plus, you have Peter Weller, Jeff Goldblum, Clancy Brown and John Lithgow, what's not to like?

I don't get it. Why would the Black Lectroids attack Earth? They're the good guys.

I love the story of how Peter Weller kept cracking up during filming because of Lithgow's Emilio Lizardo accent.

Yup, clearly I need to watch the film again since it appears I haven't seen it since I watched Breaking Bad.

Holy shit, I didn't realize so many people I liked were in this. I watched it years ago, so a the time I only knew Weller, Goldblum, Lithgow, and Lloyd.
