Did anyone watch Peter Kay's parody of the current glut of "Talent" shows?

I had a friend text me last night saying how funny it was, so I've recorded it on Channel 4+1 and I'm about to watch it, and was wondering what the general opinion of it was?

I didn't find it that funny. There were some nice touches at times, but nowhere near enough. And there was too much reliance on non-actors like Dr Fox and Pete Waterman.

Also - how can a parody of talent shows like Pop Stars be funnier than the unintentionally hilarious awfulness of the real thing?

Peter Kay has done this sort of thing before - the "Mark Park" episode of That Peter Kay Thing, for starters. He did it on a smaller scale, and it was funnier, IMO.

I've just finished the first part, and that's kinda my thoughts, too. It's pretty much what the actual shows are, so most of the time it's to close to reality to be really funny.
Although I did think 2 Up 2 Down singing "Tragedy" was funny.

I saw SOME of this, what I saw I mostly liked, not sure that would apply to the whole thing however.

the winners song was spot on, cant recall which Idol it was, but ive heard something very similar.

Switched off after 20 minutes as it was boring me. To me it just seemed like another talent show and was too real if you know what I mean. I can understand what Peter Kay was trying to do but these talent shows are such an easy target I probably could have written it.
I think he should get back to making another Phoenix Nights series instead of wasting his time with this.

I watched the last 20 minutes or so, wondering "where's the funny?" the whole time.

It had a few vaguely amusing moments, but the attempts at humour were either too underplayed to the point of banality or just too blatant and over the top. Most fell into the latter category (the absurd yet devoid of hilarity title, case in point).

I'm tempted to say it was well observed, but then I wonder; is it that hard to ape a stagnant format that we've been bombarded with for the past 8 years or so?

This might have hit the mark a few years ago, but now it feels like it's kicking the same dead horse as those it mocks, atop the same pile of deceased hoofed mammals as "George Bush is a moron" and, dare I say it, "my mother in law doesn't like me".

Bottom line, it was shite. Please do more Max and Paddy Mr. Kay, and quit arsing about.

Edit: Hmm. The post above mine says pretty much the same thing with fewer words. I do prattle on, don't I?

And another thing, the vast majority of the acting was abysmal.

Ok I'm done now, honest.

Please, go on. I agree with ya. Max and Paddy, and his stand up (aside from the fact that it's pretty much the same material) are the only things of his I've really liked.

I love most of Peter Kaye's humour but I didn't really rate this. I don't think it was as funny as the real thing. Shame, I've been waiting for new stuff for ages.

The show that was on at 8 was better than the second part at 10.15.
Did not think much to max and paddy.
But really like his stand up and loved Phoenix Nights i thought this was the best comedy i had seen in ages. and the beer ad where quite good to.

There were a few good jokes and the like, but it wasn't that great.
Big fan of Phoenix Nights and Max & Paddy, but this was no where near to their levels.
I thought R Wayne was quite funny, the name just makes me laugh. But a lot of the jokes just kept getting recycled, the title for one just got really annoying after a while. And the ending was shite too

To say that apart from cameos in Corrie and Doctor Who, Peter Kay has done sod all since Max & Paddy in late 2004, after all this time I thought "is this the best he can come up with?"
