"Bring him back." --?

In TMP when Kirk first hears Spock is outside with a thruster suit he says, "Bring him back."
How was this to be done? A tractor beam? Beaming him back? Security guards in space suits? LOL.

And seriously, Kirk thought he could get suited up before Spock took off or he just was going to blast off after him? And when we see Kirk he doesn't have a thruster suit. --?

Good eye. That whole scene is stup- not good, imo. One of those, we don't talk about Bruno moments. ;)

They seemed hell bent, for some reason, to have Kirk outside to catch Spock when he somehow got returned from no one knew where or when.

I always assumed that Kirks “bring him back here” was a command to Chekov to open up a channel to him and order him back to the Enterprise. I think Kirk quickly realizes this would potentially be useless, and decides to go out after him personally.

As for going out without a thruster suit, who knows? Maybe sensors showed that Spock was slowly on his way back to the opening, but tumbling out of control, so Kirk figured he’d just go out and recover him.

That whole sequence replaces a sequence where BOTH Spock and Kirk penetrate V’ger. This is the so-called “Memory Wall” sequence that was abandoned after a couple days of shooting. They wrote a different sequence where Spock is the only “penetrator,” but Kirk’s connecting scene on the bridge was already in the can, so they worked around it.

Yeah, when they replaced the putt-putt thruster suit from the memory wall with the jet pack it became nonsensical. It's like to catch up to a guy on a motorcycle on foot. And if Spock hadn't been expelled how was he supposed to get back?
Doesn't the computer call it an emergency evacuation Thruster pack? When you use those you're not supposed to find your way back where you came from. You're supposed to be retrieved by somebody else because... emergency.
But I think Kirk's original line about bringing him back makes most sense if you're talking about beaming back somebody in one of those very slow moving suits that we saw in the deleted scene.

I felt Chekov, as Security Officer, could bring Spock back by remote. If there's a computer in the suit, I'm sure Kirk could have it overridden. But yeah, worst case, beam him back (and risk Sonaking him into oblivion) . As for getting a fix, Kirk wanted to see where he was going and, in true Kirk fashion, intended to go face it with him. But Spock took off so he waited for him to come back.

The male computer voice always seemed so of that time period and unlike Trek. It is cool in of itself but kind comes off as sort-of HAL-ish. Then we never hear it again.
I guess we could speculate starship crews didn't like it either and ditched it.
I'm ok to see it gone.

Oddly, it WAS in TWOK a little bit, and at random times. It featured heavily in the KM simulation, and it also appears again after the Enterprise is first attacked, giving Kirk an update on how much time remains in Khan's granted "60 seconds" for finding the Genesis material.

After that it pretty much disappears, with out any explanation.

Right! But was that a creative choice or simply a budget thing -- like the re-use of stock footage, dyeing uniforms, reusing some of the V'ger images on the computer screens as being from the Genesis device?
In post, if they found a place where they needed some voice-over -- they'd be more inclined to use stock sounds rather than get someone else to record some new dialogue. Any new computer sounds were female after that, right?

I know it was in the simulator but I don't remember it being on the Enterprise at all. The only one counting down was Khan.

There’s a computer voice in the background as Kirk and Spock are considering the prefix code strategy that announces “fourty five seconds”

That's definitely Khan. It's got the accent and everything. It's just filtered through the intercom.

It's funny how almost all instances of talking computers are removed from the DE. I always thought that was kind of a cool feature of TMP.

Some computer blab went on too long (e.g. announcing "red alert" incessantly), but the harsher voice did add needed tension to the film...

The alarm klaxon noise was also more poignant, despite arguable overuse, in TMP... I recall the DE neutering it rather badly. I recall too much color correction in the DE removing a purplish color cast from the transporter room, Chekov's station's yellow hue (mostly removed) when being hit by an electrical discharge and medics arrived (where the telltale sign of a yellow stage light glowing off of McCoy still reminds of the original grading used...), etc... the DE did have some improved tightening (not always) and some better angles for f/x over reactions (e.g. destroying the asteroid)...
