Boxing cripped with corruption?

Over the last month we've had some weird calls by judges and now the refs seem to be involved. The big fight between Manny & Marquez raised eye brows though the computer stats back the Manny Win (personally I scored it a draw) BUT one judge scored Manny up by 4 which was a joke. We've had two fights involving British Fighters fighting aboard for world titles which saw one lose and one draw but no body but the 3 judges agreed with that result.

Tonight there has been another result that brings the fact that Boxing is either full of corruption or idiots...

Peterson beats Kahn by Split Decision victory (113-112, 114-111, 113-112)

The ref who deducted two points from Khan for pushing and called one of Amir's knockdowns of Peterson as a slip

The ref never properly warned Khan that he would not only take one point but two points for pushing. And the pushing didn't occur until after Amir was eating headbutts from Peterson who kept coming in low

Most of analysts couldn't even recall a fight where a fighter got deducted two points for pushing.

HBO analyst Max Kellerman declared that this was a hometown decision and the ref was wrong for taking those points away from Amir.

HBO tried to interview the ref but the local commission wouldn't let them.

Amir was an idiot for fighting the challenger in his own backyard anyway but Boxing is becoming a joke.

Yes the Kahn fight was a joke in the scoring department but it was a correct ruling for a slip as the dumb ref had his feet tangled with Peterson at the time.

I don't know how corrupt it is. I suppose any sport that relies on subjective scoring could be open to a lot of potential abuses.

What amazes me is how far boxing has sunk since my youth. Did anyone even realize there was a heavyweight title fight last night? Was it even televised in the United States? I looked for listings yesterday, and couldn't find anything.

I think that's absolutely pitiful. Klitschko has had something like ten title defenses, and I have never seen him fight.

Oh for the glory days of Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Norton... Howard Cosell and the Wide World of Sports.

Hell at this point I'd settle for Lennox Lewis.

Heavyweight boxing is in a pitiful state right now.

There's scant talent which allows the division to be dominated by the ultra-dull Klitschko brothers.

Even when someone tries to inject a bit of spice into the sport at the moment they end up coming off as class A twats - ie. Haye and Chisora. Haye was a cry-baby when he fought Klitschko, and then last night he and Chisora were an absolute disgrace.

I remember growing up with Iron Mike ruling the division, and then you had the likes of Lennox Lewis. To see what we once had, and what we now have, fuck that's depressing! :(

The sad thing is, I think both Klitschkos could have been genuinely great champions in an earlier era, but they just don't have any credible opponents.

The Klitschkos are quite popular and have a significant media presence here in Germany, perhaps because they are fluent in German. TV commercials, a feature-length documentary in the theaters last year, etc.

They get no attention here at all.

I wasn't kidding when I said I could not find a telecast of the fight yesterday. Anywhere. Maybe it was on some station I don't get? I looked at the DirecTV homepage and there was nothing.

When a heavyweight title fight goes almost completely unnoticed, something is seriously wrong with the sport.

And that's a big part of it right there...

Their only credible rivals are each other, and that ain't gonna happen.

They get very little coverage here as well, although I suspect that Sky no doubt snapped up last night's bout as it featured a British fighter.

To be honest, in recent times the welterweight and lightweight divisions have become far more interesting, with the likes of Pacquiao, Mayweather, Morales, Hatton etc giving far better entertainment.

^^
Even there though - what's after Pac-Mayweather? If that fight ever happens... And if it doesn't happen, it's even more of a joke.
