This is very common in TV and movies.

Putting them in a real/authentic uniform would be impersonating an officer. Movies and TV shows ALWAYS make "mistakes" in uniforms for this very reason.

I saw a movie with Lynda Carter in the same uniform and they had that patch correct. If there was a mistake on her uniform I didn't see it.

EDIT: I almost forgot -- the wardrobe person needs to be slapped because the division patch on this brass' shoulder is completely inaccurate. My brother happens to be in the 3D Infantry and I know that patch by heart. Jumped right out at me:

You keep saying that, and I don't believe you. Here is what I found on the InterWeb Thingy about impersonating an officer:
Impersonating a Police Officer Lawyers

Is it Illegal to Impersonate a Police Officer?
It is a crime to falsely impersonate a police officer, a federal officer or employee, or any other public official. Although the laws vary from state to states, many states also consider it a crime to use equipment used by law enforcement officers, such as red and blue flashing lights. It also may be a crime to flash a fake police badge. Possession of a firearm also can enhance the penalty for false impersonation of a police officer.
If these people are actors, on a closed movie set, then they are NOT impersonating an officer. Do you have a source that explains how they would be impersonating an officer?

Best I can find is this:

United States Code Title 10 > Subtitle A > Part II > Chapter 45

§ 772. When wearing by persons not on active duty authorized

(f) While portraying a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, an actor in a theatrical or motion-picture production may wear the uniform of that armed force if the portrayal does not tend to discredit that armed force.

It would seem that, from the source I found this which was a post on a message board, that I'm wrong in that it is illegal to portray one period.

But I would infer from this code that, perhaps, to be "better safe than sorry" mistakes are put in so as to not be doing something illegal should the armed force decide the portrayal didn't suit them.

Of course a longer, and probably more likely, answer is that shows on ran on budgets of both time and personell and it's not always economical or "worth it" to make sure uniforms are accurate.

Who was the actor who played Jerry's Nephew? He looked familiar.

Henry was played by BJ Wallace. And if you noticed an actual similarity between the two kids, there's a good reason. Henry's girlfriend, Fiona, was played by BJ's real life sister, Emilee Wallace! I recall seeing hteir two names together in the opening credits, and figured those two actors would be playing two characters related to each other. So as soon as Annie Potts brought her concern to Jerry, I knew they were going to end up having the same sperm donor.

And that has to be creepy, pretending your sister/brother is your girlfriend/boyfriend. ;)

The actor's name is BJ Wallace. he's been in an episode of Medium: The Whole Truth and a movie from 2006 Max and the Furious Fly. This info I got from IMDB.

The girl who plays his sister in the episode is his real lfe sister. Played by Emilee Wallace .
