Borrowing library books

When I was growing up, one of my favorite memories was being taken to the library in the summers. I read all the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and Boxcar Children books from the public library where I grew up. When I was in grade school, I think I stopped in every other day on the walk home to get a book or check one back in. I think I borrowed all the Trek novelizations too.

I read all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books from the library at the grade school I went to as well.

As an adult, however, I am reminded of something a dear old friend of mine once said, "Books are trophies." I don't borrow much from the library. I prefer to have my own library of trophies. Yeah, I own some stinkers, but I do an annual culling to make sure what I own is good, but I rarely go to the library. I'm enjoying owning my own books. I'm also just about the point of being able to lend books to friends and colleagues and enjoy that, as the corollary of my friend's comment was, "If someone borrows a book from me and doesn't return it, I take it to mean they liked it so much that they kept it. And what does that say about me that they liked one of my trophies so much that they kept it?!"
