Going along with the idea that "Conspiracy" was originally intended to be a precursor to an (insectoid not cyborg) "Borg", I have been brainstorming how a insectoid species story arc might have looked like. And so:-
1) Conspiracy - mostly as shown, but without the head exploding and mother alien chest bursting. But WITH the ominous, foreboding signal.
2) Neutral zone - intro colony still intact, but every trace of organic material stripped away. Not yet realised yet, is that insectoids are rabid, army ant types.
3) Q Who - pretty much as shown, but ship is a gigantic, organic, living entity, and so actually regrows itself after an attack. And is quite happy to swallow the ship, strip out the organics and spit out what remains! And so the lone intruder is far more interesting in consuming crew members to discover how tasty they are, rather than investigating their tech!
Then, going on to further and more intrusive feeding raids with whole ecologies decimated.
Ongoing attempts to "possess" leaders by the controlling "Conspiracy" parasites, but maybe some species (Vulcans/Romulans maybe? And, I know that then the Vulcan in "Conspiracy" would need to go) are invulnerable to the controlling parasites?
Maybe the Klingon Civil War arc is due to the Duras and supporters being "possesed" and so controlled.
Just a few thoughts, and hoping to see your ideas.
