Book Summary

dispatcher812

Commander
Red Shirt
In preperation of the new Typhon Pact books next year, I started to reread the first 5. One of things I have a hard time doing is retaining what I have read, especially after such a long tme inbetween installments which is why I reread certain ones. I just finished Zero Sum Game and then wrote a summary of events. Does anyone else do this?

I've done this with every book I read, going back about 9 years now.

Would you be willing to publish your summaries on a personal blog or share them in any other way? Like the creator of this thread, I often forget some details but never had the time to create my own notes :/

I make some notes for ongoing series which I know will have big lapses in between entries. I too would love for Thrawn's notes to be availible in some form. Please, Thrawn????

Isn't that what "Memory Beta" is for? Put up the summaries and let others annotate and cross reference the characters and events.

I just looked at that and while they do have a summary it seems to be missing alot. I looked at Seize the fire. But I guess that would work.

I know of Memory Beta but like what what was said above, it's not exactly complete.

I've thought about it, but I definitely write them for me, not for other people; there's a lot of shorthand and slang, and asides that I think I'd later find funny. It's not exactly the sort of thing I could upload to, for instance, Memory Beta without a hell of a lot of editing, and it just doesn't seem like it's worth the time.

it seems to be missing alot.

That's my point. Memory Beta needs regular contributors, proofreaders, editors, trivia experts.

If everyone said that, it would never grow/improve. ;)

I don't upload much to MB, but if I see errors or omissions I can fix quickly, I edit them. Entries don't have to be perfect first time, and you can add a note in "Talk" and ask for help editing.

^Huh? Have there been issues with MB?

I won't go into those issues again as there was quite a battle raging about it in February. I'll just say, that I got out as I find it a very uncomfortable and frustrating place to contribute to, with absolutely no community-minded atmosphere at all.

Certainly not my experience. Ditto Memory Alpha. Anyone challenging my edits has done so in a patient, friendly manner.

I would love to see the TrekLit equivalent of the Doctor Who reference guide emerge...somewhere...

There was an ongoing "ST reference guide" project on a ST fiction listserv, but listservs seem to have fallen by the wayside as wikis took off. I haven't received an automated update from that listserv in years. They had done a lot of work, and I urged them to switch it all across to MB, but I doubt that happened.

I am pleased that you have had a pleasant experience editing on there, and I hope that you continued to do so. I was a big part in resurrecting that wiki back in the day and spearheaded many initiatives on there with many fine people, who, unfortunately have left for varying reasons.

As a former administrator on there, I received many a PM or emails from users had been driven away by the sarcastic and high-handed administration being performed by some members.

Of course, discussion of these issues lead to tense confrontations and arguments and, not to put to fine a point on it, as this is a non-paying hobby, it's not worth the hastle.

I will continue with my own database, as it is a labour of love and I enjoy doing it. I, of course, extend an invite to anyone wishing to participate. :)

Yeah, I'm fairly certain that "I was talking to Andy the other day about football, and that's I think the best way to understand the Romulan tactics here" is a little beyond the MB threshold :)

I don't mean that they're inaccurate and need a few tweaks, I mean that they're written for me.
