Bones' animosity towards Spock born out of jealousy?

This might add a twist to the Big Three.

According to the movie, Kirk and Bones got pretty close over the three years they spent at the academy (why else would he risk his career, and Kirk's health, to get him on board the Enterprise). All of a sudden, this Vulcan/human hybrid enters the picture and is destined to be Kirk's best friend? Throughout TOS' run, we've seen the verbal sparring of Spock and Bones, but it was never explained where the tension came from. This movie, at least, establishes a root for it. Now, I know the hardcore canonistas will decry what I said and claim that humanity has moved past petty rivalries and blah blah blah. All I can say is to get your head out of the 24th Century. This ain't Berman Trek. It's Star Trek. Period.

Does anyone else think this might add some spice in future movies?

Berman Trek I cannot comment on since I mostly did not watch it, but I always thought the constant arguing between McCoy and Spock was based partly on jealousy. Each man wants to be Jim's best friend. Of course, as time goes on they become friends themselves, and the competition is gone, but they still keep to their familiar pattern of verbal sparring.

I always felt it was Spock's Vulcan approach to problems, emotionless, logical, was at odds with McCoy's more emotional, empathetic approach. As Kirk's closest advisers, and friends, these stark differences often created tension.

That's why the trio worked so well. Spock was logic and reason, McCoy was conscience and compassion, and Kirk tried to balance these, as he was the one who ultimately made the decisions.

I'm going to agree. Even in this new universe.

Jealousy has nothing to do with it, NuMcCoy doesn't seem like the petty type, and shares McCoy Prime's humanistic qualities that clash with both NuSpock's and Spock Prime's Vulcan ways.

Nah, I think there's room for both philosophical differences and dare I say very human emotions in the characters. :)
