Some time ago, during discussion of Quantum of Solace, I posited at length at how it was in danger of being the Licence to Kill of Craig's tenure; how they perhaps went overboard in playing to his strengths (like LTK did with Dalton's) and lost much of the individuality of the 007 series. However, I said that QOS's financial success meant that it was unlikely to result in the hiatus that followed LTK's underwhelming performance?

Too optimistic? Apparently Eon have announced that because of the uncertainty of MGM's status, production on Bond 23 has been delayed indefinitely.

This was to be the movie where Sam Mendes directed a Peter Morgan-assisted script. This could have been a cracker. Hopefully we're not looking at a 6 year-gap - not to mention the end of the current incumbent's role - as we did between LTK and Goldeneye. But it's not good news for Bond fans.

007 producers, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions, today announced they have suspended development on the next James Bond film previously scheduled for release 2011/2012.

"Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on 'Bond 23' indefinitely. We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of 'Bond 23,'" stated Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli jointly.

EON Productions have produced twenty two James Bond films since 1962. In 1995, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli took over the 007 franchise from Albert R 'Cubby' Broccoli and are responsible for producing some of the most successful James Bond films ever, including Casino Royale and more recently Quantum of Solace. The James Bond franchise is the longest running in film history. EON Productions and Danjaq LLC are affiliate companies and control all worldwide merchandising for James Bond.

Great minds think alike ... but they also say fools seldom differ!

I think Jackson's thread has won. Someone put this one out of its misery!

No...that one's full of posers and chumps.

Well, I don't think it will last long (the problem with Bond 23 I mean). They'll sort it out...I can wait 2 more years for a good Bond movie.

Look at the next Trek...June of 2012! I mean not even next summer but the one after! But on the other hand I know time flies.

Can someone explain to me exactly what Bond's "license to kill" entails?

I mean I grew up watching the movies and they say Bond has this license to kill and I think "Obviously! He's the good guy and good guys may at times have to shoot their way of a bad situation."
But what does it really mean? How does it make him different and in what circumstance can he use this license?

This is obviously an outgrowth of MGM's complicated financial situation rather than a reflection on Quantum Of Solace or the direction of the Bond series. What can you say about a once-dominant studio whose fortunes currently, literally hang on the performance of Hot Tub Time Machine?

Licence to kill.

There is some debate over whether such a licence is a fictional construct or not. In simple terms, Bond and other 00 agents are given licence by Her Majesty's Government to use deadly force at their discretion if they deem it necessary to complete their mission without fear of prosecution under British law.

Bond is bound by our modern concepts of acceptable wartime conduct, since he is not a soldier and he usually acts against organisations where no formal declaration of war exists. His licence therefore does not require him to accept an enemy's surrender or prove that he was acting in self defence.
