Boinc! Anyone else here looking for aliens or the cure for cancer?

I was wondering if anyone else here uses Seti@Home, or one of the other projects using Boinc.
For those who do not know what Boinc is, it's a platform where you can share your unused computer cycles for a worthy cause. For example, analyzing radio signals from outer space (Seti@Home) or analyzing proteins structures for disease research (Rosetta@Home) and many more.

I'm not aware if there's possibly already a TrekBBS group. But it would be fun to create one of course.

To participate in something like that, I would have to actually have unused computer cycles. :shifty:

That is very interesting. But I tend to keep my system powered down or in standby when not being used. And besides, its a single core Athlon 64. Old skool.

I used to crunch D2OL, which is a similar project, for an overclocking site. Can't be bothered to set it up again though.

I used to be on the TrekBBS team and do SETI and Folding@Home, but BOINC's software leaves a lot to be desired.

I've been trying to join your team -but I cannot find the "Join this team" button :(

Oh, and this thread was a nice reminder to use some of that awesome power in my CPU and GPU :bolian:
Go to your account page: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/home.php
Then on the right it says Community, under it says: Member of team, you should be able to click on a "Join team" link.

Good to have you aboard trekkiedane, we'll find those aliens! :bolian:

I'm not sure how related this query is, but wasn't there a program you could volunteer for, where NASA sent in images of galaxies and participants categorised them, since computers weren't able to do it themselves, and there were too many for the NASA guys to do alone? Is that still around?

Maybe it was because my request to un-join another team hadn't been processed earlier... But this time there WAS a join button at the Trek BBS page! :bolian:

Why don't these @home projects do something just for fun? Like a simulation of an island with a climate and ecosystem, in as fine detail as is realistically possible.

I used to do the SETI search. Processed something like 40 or 50 thousand packets. BOINC software was a major PITA and kept locking up my system. Got so pissed at the lockups that I eventually uninstalled BOINC and quit the SETI search. Might rejoin in the future, but the software needs a major revision to work out a lot of bugs.

That's why I've never joined. My Uncle and Cousin use this computer during the day for their business and I don't want them having issues.

I used to run LHC@home and seti@home, but nowadays I prefer the fans not to run at 100% all the time.

Yeah, ths is what concerns me the most - having had a laptop with a faulty fan before, I don't really want to take that risk again.

I use it on both of my computers. They're turned off when not in use, but even when you are doing something, your CPUs have a lot of unused cycles. :)

Registered since 2004 (Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) 1:321:06:33:38), but before that I had SETI@Home.
I participate in the following projects:
Influenza Antiviral Drug Search
Help Fight Childhood Cancer
Nutritious Rice for the World
Help Conquer Cancer
Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together
Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2
FightAIDS@Home
Genome Comparison
Help Defeat Cancer
Human Proteome Folding
