Bob Orci on why the Enterprise is built in Iowa

Hell, this the Robauverse!
It's silliness like this that led to nobodys like Boba Fett being so popular.'

Meh. They could have had it built in S.F. or space and named it after Kirk. Iowa? In the middle of nowhere?

Actually, it would make more sense to build it in the middle of nowhere (compared to S.F.) because you would need a lot of open space.
Lots of open space...in SPACE.

Hence why I said compared to S.F. If you were going to build it on the ground, it would make more sense to do so in Iowa than near a major city.

How big do you think these ships are? Sea-going vessels of comparable size are built in/near major cities all the time. Even TNG Enterprises are just a bit larger than the Paramount lot. :p

I believe that this Enterprise is supposed to be much larger than the previous ones... I read in an ILM interview somewhere that it was around 3000 yards IIRC.

Ug, it would make more sense to have the shipyard there in the first place, and have Mrs. Kirk be a local girl who met George in a bar or something. When she was widowed, she went back to live with her family, which naturally puts young James T. in proximity with Starfleet.

Or they're built way out in nowhere. Like right here, town of 160000 people yet time after time the biggest container ships in the world have been built right here...

Picture building a model in zero G.Yeah, imagine screws spinning all over your room, paint glopping everywhere, and you floating around trying to keep track of everything.Multiply that effort X 100000000 and you have space shipbuilding. In the 24th century its better to build massive vessels in orbit-when massive parts can be built/replicated and assembled on site.Better to build the ship on Earth, turn on the engines and have the thing fly itself outta orbit to spacedock for trim and paint, similar to how airliners are delivered 'green' with bare aluminum/composite showing to the carrier for final paint and trimming.
In movie it makes sense at Starfleets level of tech to build their ships on Earth.

But if George gets a shipyard, I'm sure Robau gets an entire starbase or something. Why? Cuz he's Robau.

The ship that was originally going to be called the Enterprise was renamed the "U.S.S. Robau." That's why the Enterprise in the JJverse is a more advanced ship constructed years later than in the oldTrek timeline.

After reading the comics, apparently Captain Robau was killed by the Debrune Teral'n itself. If you have to get gutted by a blade, let it be an ancient artifiact I guess.

Not quite that big :) The alternate universe Enterprise is either 2,500 or 3,000 feet long, depending on who your source is. Hopefully TPTB will clarify this at some point, or we will have endless ship length debates that echo the 540/947/1080-foot debate for the old Enterprise :D

Rama, would it hurt you to actually provide a link to the webpage where this is written?

HaH! I called it. The only real (but vital) hint was that the writers said it was no coincidence within the narrative that the shipyard was built in Iowa.

I think they should rename the entire Alpha quadrant to Robau Quadrant. :bolian:

Actually, they've named a whole new technology, as well as a sci-franchise after him...it's just mis-spelled.

ROBOTECH!

In the early-morning ship yard scene, where Kirk pulls up on his motor bike and takes a long look -- did anybody notice they put reflections of the ship works in his eyes?

That was a sweet little detail; the ship yard was CGI, and they put a little CGI reflection in his eyes.

Don't think so; Nero stabbed him in the chest, and it showed up terminated on screen in big, red letters.

I liked Robau; he looked good.
Yup, the chest.

Plus: yup!

Robau went out in style.

Few things beat getting speared by a giant can opener.
I thought Cap'n Robau would have made a majestic Pharoah. He was a beautiful man.

Which explains all the bald robots and androids I've been seeing lately.
