Boardwalk Empire

Tom

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Season 2 just wrapped. This is such a great show, I love it more and more. Is anyone else here a fan?

Didn't see last night's episode as a movie was showing instead. I've been watching since the start, although I didn't like season 2 as much as the first. It felt somewhat more scattered.

I think this is the best show on television.

Season 2 was amazing, very well done I thought. Everything on this show from the acting, to character development, to dialogue, to the attention to detail on the sets and costumes is top notch.

Spoiler below....

I must admit I was surprised at Nucky's decision to get back with Eli in the finale, especially after Eli lied to Nucky about having him killed (Eli was the one who first suggested it). Maybe he thinks Eli is easier to control than Jimmy would have been? That scene on the porch where Eli can't wrap his head around a simple Shakespeare quote leads me to believe that may be the case.

Can't wait for season 3.

Best line from the finale:

"Welcome back, fellas!" - Chalky White

I was totaly surprised by what happened to Jimmy, I thought Manny would get it, wow what a shock. I'm going to guess you will see Jimmy's mom out for revenge next season, she will have Richard to help her and since the Estate goes to Tommy she will have some money. I liked the whole WW1 angle they used with Jimmy. Boy, Nucky is going to be bullshit when he hears margret signed over all that land to the church.

I think Nucky believed Elli becuse Ellie did try to come to Nucky for forgiveness but that was before the shooting, also Jimmy was there when Nucky was shot in the hand so Nucky knew for a fact Jimmy was in on it. They also knew the shooter was from Chicago and Jimmy was good friends with Capone. So it seems like we lost a few charachers this season, I guess that means new ones next season. I'm not sure if Van-Alden will be gone for good, he ran off to the midwest.

It's one of my favorite running shows. I was wondering why no one opened a thread for it until now ...

Anyway, this season was great, better than the first one. Killing Jimmy off was a surprise, as was what happened to his wife and the reveal about him and his mother.

This show needs more Rothstein, and I hope they keep Van Alden. Both are great characters played by great actors.

I think you would like the show Temis. I think a lot of people get put off becuse it takes place in 1920 -21 during proabition, but I think it's facinating looking at that era and the genisis of major organized crime (Capone, Luck Luchiano, etc..) in America.

I didn't know season 2 was already airing. I was very impressed with the first season. I also love the 20s, anyway.

I see Boardwalk Empire as a prequel to the Sopranos. it's that brilliant.

It's funny how both take place in New Jersey but at different times. Although BE gets around to NY, Philly and Chicago also.

It's got that feel and the quality is superb. I'm not sure that it's a co-incidence... don't both shows share many of the same crew? I plan to rewatch the series again after last nights finale. I forgot Scorsece was involved and directed the pilot.

Really surprised about Jimmy, but I guess since the story is based on history (somewhat) we all know Capone is the last man standing, right? I thought a bit more reflection on his relationship with his mother would be explored. Then again, perhaps last week's show was the culmination of that particular storyline.

Funny that that time period would put people off, but I guess it's true. I love the period, and it is underdone on television. Maybe next year there will be several shitty dramas in the same time period... (the twenties is the new sixties ;) )

Prohibition is fascinating. You think it'll come into fashion again someday?

Van Alden's incredible. He's got considerable depth as a character. I'm sure S3 will feature him in a major way.

I really enjoyed this season. It kept the meticulousness and slow character development that I loved from the first season, but it was more eventful. Something major seemed to happen in every episode which kept the plot running along nicely, but it didn't sacrifice the tone of the show to do it. And on a personal note, I really enjoyed the inclusion of the Irish War of Independence in the plot and I hope they include some elements from the civil war in season 3.

Van Alden was the best character in the show in season 1, but I don't think he was as good this season. There was something about his insane assuredness of his moral righteousness that made him absolutely mesmerising, but now that he has been corrupted he has lost much of his edge. I hope he returns next season, but closer to the way he was in season 1.

I kept seeing Dominic Chianese's name (Uncle Jun' in the Sopranos) in the credit and wondered where the fuck he was. And then I noticed him. Holy shit, he's unrecognizable!

Huh, that's odd, as it's the 1920's and the Prohibition that attracted me to this series as it's so different from everything else on the air. I'd never think of anyone ever being turned off by it.

I'll always check out any series that is set before 1950 (and sometimes even after). Nice bonus that it sounds like it's very good.

Love this show. This week's ep was sure better than last week's trainwreck of an episode.

Although I didn't see Jimmy's demise coming. I thought Manny would buy it.

I've greatly enjoyed most of the good cable shows, like The Sopranos, Rome, Game of Thrones, etc. Currently enjoying Hell on Wheels on AMC. Colm Meaney FTW. My tastes are broad.

I just didn't get into BWE though. I watched the first half of the first season, and then slowly lost interest towards the end. Didn't come back to the second season, I don't have that much time each week to watch TV and there are a few better shows on. It wasn't bad, I just stopped caring. Nothing to do with the period either.

Season 2 has been fantastic and deserves to win all the gold at the Emmy's. The TV Line forums is full of people crying and complaning about Jimmy's demise but this show is supposed to be brutal and cold ;)

Killing off Jimmy was an absolute surprise to me. All this time, I thought Eli was going to be killed by the way he has been unraveling this season with his betrayal of Nucky, killing that guy out of some misguided anger, and pushing for Nucky's death. I could have lived with the show going on after his death. But Jimmy's? I don't know. I mean, it could change the show in interesting dramatic ways like when they killed off Pussy in the Sopranos. Once that moment happened, that show reached a whole new level. Maybe the same will happen with Boardwalk Empire. But I will still miss Jimmy and I feel uncomfortable with the thought that Tommy will be raised by Jimmy's incestous mother. Hopefully, Richard will be there to keep an eye on her. I don't want Tommy to grow up to be anoter troubled Jimmy and I think Jimmy didn't want that for his son either.

I think Gretchen Mol will have a bigger role in Season 3. I think she will try to team up with here on and off again lover Lucky to get revenge on Nucky and maybe Eli. I was also sad when Angela got killed. You would have figured that Micheal Pitt who has 3rd billing on the show would have not been killed off. As for Van Alden, his life as a fed is done so i can see him possibly working for some crime group at some point, unless Shannon is done with the series along with Pitt. Lastly, got to also love the weasly Micky Doyle character, that guy always seems to survive. lol
