Bluray release of the Movies?

Since yesterday I really want a Bluray release of the movies.
I wanted to watch TUC again after a long time.
But I couldn't.
Last time I watched it was before I upgraded to a big 1080p TV.
I only realised now that the standard DVD edition I have does not contain a REAL widescreen version of the movie.
It's in a letterbox format, so on my new TV there are black bars up, down and on the sides of the picture.
Not really a pleasure to watch one of my favorites in post stamp size on a big screen.
Since I essentially have to rebuy it now, all the other TOS movies I've got as the SE in true widesreen, so no problem there, I should go all the way and make it the first Trek movie to get in HD.
Has anybody heard anything about a bluray relase yet?

Star Trek I through VI are going to be released on BluRay before or with the release of the new Star Trek movie. So, you're looking at probably late April or early May for the HD movies.

It should be noted that TMP, when last reported, would not be released as the superior (IMO) Director's Cut, because the CG shots made for the release in 1999 were not made in 1080p. Thus, they would have to be recreated or re-rendered in 1080p for a blu-ray release. See www.bluray.com or www.thedigitalbits.com for more details.

I'm assuming you have the single-disc version, then? The single-disc release was not anamorphic widescreen. If you pick up the two-disc release, it is anamorphic and should show up much better on your TV.

I don't really know what I'm talking about, but that seems like horse shit to me.

Why is redoing scenes that were made only a few years ago, versus a movie filmed in the 1970's be any more or less difficult to re-render and make available in high def?

True, but if I can choose between the SE version and the Bluray version in a few months it would be stupid not to coose the better one ;-).

The scenes that were made only a few years ago were done at a lower resolution, and that lower resolution only; the effects would need to be completely re-rendered to work at the high-def resolution. The resolution of the existing film print is actually at a higher resolution than is needed for HDTV or Blu-ray, so it requires no modification in that regard.

In other words, Paramount decided to be cheap back in 2001, and now this is the result in 2009. We all know Paramount's penchant for double-dipping; the TMP-DE will make it to Blu-ray someday.

I guess it depends on how bad you want to watch it right now. I've seen the 2 disk special edition on sale for $6.99, which is less than the price of a single movie ticket. For me 7 bucks would be cheap enough to buy a "disposable" copy that would be obsolete in a few months if I really wanted to see the movie. Of course, I'm the double-dip sucker that movie companies target.

Except for the fact that you can get the two disc SE for ALOT cheaper.

I try not to double-dip. I might add it to my lovefilm renting list.

I'm try not to double-dip but I`m a sucker for best possible quality with my favorite movies. That means bluray in this case. I will wait for the prices to come down with the other Trek movies I can watch just fine right now.

Anything recorded onto film is generally just as good, if not better (depending on the kind of film) than HD. So it's not difficult to take an old film and down sample it to HD resolutions. The problem with TMP and it's new special effects are that they were made for the old standard TV resolutions. There isn't an original high resolution version to resample from. They would just have to redo them again, which is a shame because I really like the DE of TMP.

By the way, sources are now saying that the release for the first 6 movies in Blu-ray will be May 5 (3 days before the new movie)

It's just rumor so far, but the official announcement should come by late February at the latest.

Blu-ray.com & Home theater forum & Hidefdigest all have threads on the subject of release date & other matters concerning the release.

so they are leaning towards a box set release initially?

Kinda surprised they don't release them one at a time.

either way it's a buy!

^^^ it's the only way they can sell the horrid Insurrection and Nemesis films.

I bought the 10 DVD pack only for the TOS movies, but they shoved down my throat the horrible TNG movies which I had no interest in.

Bill Hunt of the "Digital Bits' just reported from the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show that Paramount stated that the first half of 2009 would be big for Star Trek catalog titles on Blu-ray.

That means the movies or TOS re-mastered or Enterprise or all, since TNG DS9 & Voy can't be upgraded to Hi-def as their FX were composited on 480p video.

With the new movie coming it's slam dunk for the TOS movies or the TOS series or both.

If I understand correctly, they wouldn't have to *re-create* the effects, just re-RENDER them. Not the same thing. It's like writing a program from scratch vs. re-compiling the existing source code. Not a trivial task, but not the same as doing the whole thing over again from square one.
