Blu Ray Upscaling from SD

I bought the complete TNG set and it arrived today. Looking forward to watching all the hard work put into it. I notice a few eps have a few seconds of SD upscaled material due to not being found in their original form. Will this be noticeable when watching?

Thanks

To me, it is noticeable when it does occur, especially as it is upscaled from videotape masters. But there is so little of it that it isn't really a big deal.

Wasn't the biggest omission a short, 2 min scene from Sins of the Father? Seems like the rest of the SD inserts were minimal, a few seconds each, with the vast majority of episodes being 100% complete.

I believe they found SOTF after the initial Next Level release. Each is only a second or two, with the exception being Power Play which is a minute and a half.

You will definitely notice in a certain minute-long part of a season 5 episode ("Power Play"), but fate is fortuitous since most of the footage involved in that episode were wide shots or with softer backgrounds. It'll be noticed but nowhere near as jarring as it otherwise could have been.

You'll only see sharpness loss. The grading process used to match the NTSC videotape (VT) to the original 35mm is quite a phenomenal match given the limitations of VT, especially if you understand how technicians back in the day changed "National Television System Committee" to "Never The Same Color" as a form of a joke... can't blame them TBH...

Most of the issues, which ALF pointed out, are very brief indeed. Seeing whole episodes as a blurry jagged upscale might not be as fun, however.

Indeed, given the scope of the project, the fact so little was not recoverable is pretty awesome in of itself.

Thanks guys. Which scene in Power Play is it?
Actually Power Play suffered the most, because quite a bit of the teaser was lost, while there were other scenes throughout that were missing. In total PP had about 3 minutes of upconverted video. Over the whole series there was about 5 minutes of upconverted footage. And the 30 secs from “Sins Of The Father” was only in SD on the Next Level—-by the time Season 3 came out they had discovered the footage had been shot during another episode and had been stored with that episode, and it’s in HD on the S3 set.

With Season 1, “We’ll Always Have Paris” has a 2 second upconvert were Riker looks from Picard to Data while their at the back of the bridge talking. The second part of Best Of Both Worlds has a battle bridge scene that’s been upconverted for about 5 seconds—-it’s on both the standalone and S5 discs. “The Drumhead” also has upconverted footage, but in this one it kind of adds to the shot as the upconverted footage is the shots of the warp core through Geordi’s window, while the section is sealed off from the explosion.

^ The First Duty is actually the one where several shots of the bridge in the teaser were lost and had to be upconverted. Power Play apparently only loses some of the scenes in Ten Forward, but I still haven't been able to notice which ones they are.

The SD footage is miniscule and highlights how great the HD looks.

I bought all seven seasons and it was nice to see TNG get the treatment it deserved. Watching Yesterday's Enterprise on bluray was like seeing it for the first time.
