Blizzard's new MMO

Chances are high for it to be a Starcraft MMO.. it's their second franchise and it would be easy to capitalize on its popularity rather than build something from the ground up.

Didn't Blizzard already say their new MMO is a new IP, unrelated to Starcraft/Warcraft/Diablo?

The popular theory is this:

Blizzard have mastered the MMO, Activision have mastered the FPS. So its reasonable to think that Activision-Blizzard are bringing together their two greatest skills for this project.

Further evidence was seen in a job postings for the new MMO, asking for artists specializing in futuristic designs.

ie, an MMO with strong FPS elements, and being future based.

Am I crazy, or does that just look like a heavily photo-shopped image of Atlantis from Stargate?

That IS Atlantis. Barring some miraculous Stargate Worlds revival, this is a fake, or MGM has probably got some grounds to make some easy money back.

Ha! I wasn't the only one! So I'm not totally crazy then...

Well maybe, but anyway!

Right now it seems like there's quite a few MMOs out there, with several of them moving to a free to play method. (Champions Online for example)

I guess I'm wondering if another MMO would do ok. I mean look at AION, which a friend of mine says looks fantastic and she enjoyed participating in the beta, but now it's virtually dropped off the face of the internet. Blizzard does have the fact that, well, it's blizzard and that alone is almost enough to put money in the till. But would it be enough to keep an MMO afloat?

If the MMO is good, sure. It won't be a Starcraft MMO though. My guess is that they will go the FPS route with it. Reason being, they still have the number 1 MMO out there - why compete directly with themselves?

Blizzard won't compete with themselves if their new MMO is a success while WoW sees diminishing returns.

Despite the apparent fakery of that image, I hope that it goes futuristic apocalyptic. I like the idea of an MMOFPS. It has intrigued me ever since playing Planetside - a game flawed in almost every way but still managed to be incredibly fun. no 10 player deathmatch can match the feeling of 100 people on each side warring with each other. Amazing.

I'm hoping against a Worlds of Starcraft. MMO's based on existing franchise's tend to screw over the lore to make the gameplay work. Starcraft 3, even if it takes another 12 years, would be much better.

As for the city, I can definitely see the Atlantis resemblance, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a fake. Blizzard has a habit of.... "referencing" stuff that they like.

I've heard the "MMO first-person shooter in a futuristic setting" rumors. They seem reasonable. It would give Blizzard the chance to establish another subscription-based money-maker, while not competing too directly with WOW, which probably has at least another two expansions in it, maybe 3. Sci-fi, not fantasy. First-person shooter, rather than role-playing. Probably very casual-friendly and light on the grind.

The picture strikes me as a fake, though.

Blizzard has already said the new MMO is not based on an existing property. Other than that, all they have said is it's a Sci-fi setting.

There's a source out there saying BUNGIE (creators of Halo) is going to be releasing a sci-fi MMO-FPS called "Destiny". Competition???

2 rumored games already in competition... let's toss in a rumored Valve sci-fi MMO-FPS while we are at it. (as a side note, i hate game rumors and i hate the way they are handled by game "journalists." they are so easy to make up and so hard to verify.)

I'm writing an MMO that will totally beat the pants off of WoW and this silly "Titan" business. I have no screenshots, no code, and no evidence--but trust me! :p
