Bleach - Anime that grew on me

My husband loves pretty much all kinds of Anime. With me, it is very different. I can`t stand most of the Anime he is watching and the vast majority of what he is exchanging with a colleague from work. My six-year-old daughter and my husband often sit together watching Anime but I usually just wander off after a while because at best it doesn`t interest me and at worst I find it annoying.

Not so long ago my husband got episodes from an Anime series that was new to him. At that time I had no idea what it was when I noticed it for the first time when I was passing by through the living room. The artwork immediately got my attention. I hate the extreme Manga style showing people with huge eyes and piggy bank lips. I especially dislike the habit of putting girl faces on women`s bodies and dress them in silly school uniforms. Afterwards the writers often seem to have trouble to make their minds up if these are actually girls or women.

But this time, I found the artwork actually beautiful and intriguing. This was still typical Manga or Anime in many ways but the extremes were toned down in a way I found attractive and interesting to look at. But my timing was unfortunate. Having a dad kicking his son across the room and shouting at each other while the artwork changed into a very abstract style spoiled it for me and when I paid more attention next time it was during a fight involving a character who looked so much like the typical Anime brute that I didn`t stick around for long again.

Therefore my passion for Bleach was definitely not love at first sight. In spite of my bad first impressions my husband was insistent and asked me one day to stay and try to look past the quirks this series has. Now I am grateful that my husband`s colleague introduced him to Bleach and that my husband, who knows what I actually like, got me to give the series a real chance. I must admit, there are still some of these over-the- top moments when I just roll my eyes and I still can`t stand this stupid talking teddy bear but these scenes don`t happen often and sometimes I can`t help it: The exaggeration can make these humorous scenes actually more funny!

The more I watched Bleach the more I was amazed how complex this series actually is. It is a very impressive example of world building. The Bleach universe has a LOT of different layers and elements I find fascinating to explore. It is continually growing and evolving, building on what happened before and providing new surprises. Bleach is an ongoing series that has to date more than 200 episodes and three movies. I started to become a fan when my husband had nearly reached episode 70. It didn`t put me off, the contrary. Of course I didn`t know all the background when I started to get seriously interested but I still understood what the main story thread was about.

But I think in order to really appreciate Bleach you should watch it from the beginning. I definitely understood a lot more and also noticed some subtle fineries for the first time when I watched episodes again. You can watch Bleach and just enjoy the action, the amazing and sometimes breath taking fantasy fight scenes, the humour, the music and the strong friendship between the main characters. Bleach is definitely entertaining but to me it is much more than that.

Not only has Bleach a very sophisticated universe, it also has a rich variety of characters who also have layers that are very complex when you look closely. Some of them are very interesting indeed. It didn`t take long and I developed very close bonds with some of these fictional characters. The same applies to my daughter who loves this series as well.

My six-year-old loves science fiction and fantasy, as we do. We let her watch Doctor Who under supervision but not Torchwood. In this case, we decided to let her watch Bleach under supervision but not D.Gray-Man, which is excellent too, a different series with similar ideas but in many ways darker than Bleach. Her favourite character is the main female character called Rukia. She is a warrior, a strong but also very feminine character I also like very much. My favourite character is Ishida, the Quincy. He is the “nerd” of the group of friends, socially awkward and extremely intelligent. He isn`t particularly strong, certainly not physically but makes up for it by outthinking his opponents. Ishida is one of the most complex characters and a lot of his history is still waiting to be explored in much more depth and detail.

I like it very much that men and women are treated as equals in the series. Women are no less diverse, strong and interesting than the men. I also like it that the series also shows strong people who are not warriors, who lack the “killer instinct”, but who are no less important and valued, well, not by everyone but Bleach does a good job of challenging these prejudices especially warrior characters have sometimes as well as the idea of nobility and class. There are good character stories dealing with what is the law and what is actually right, about when not to follow orders, when to stand up for what you think is right even when doing so is not only difficult but even dangerous. I found it very interesting that one of the captains and therefore one of the strongest fighters is a man who also battles a chronic and it seems incurable illness he has since birth.

When I started to explore what is available I was amazed to discover how big Bleach actually is. The variety of merchandise is amazing. One of the first things I bought are the Bleach art books, soundtracks and the Manga books. Therefore I read the books after having watched the series and I discovered that there are scenes in the books that are not in the episodes as well as the other way round. Sometimes the books have more character scenes and also darker versions of scenes that seemed to have been toned down for the TV audience. I found it interesting to compare both.

There is also a variety of Bleach websites around but so far I still haven`t found one where I could discuss Bleach as I can do here with Star Trek. I am still not fully up to date with the complex Bleach universe and need my Bleach guide book now and again but would be grateful for some advice.

Are there some Bleach fans here, too?

I am a huge fan of Bleach, my dream job would be as a member of squad 4.

I know they are the grunt work squad but they also seem to have the nicest and most understanding squad captain.

How far caught up are you on Bleach?

I dig the Bleach! It was definitely one of those shows that starts really slow, but by the time you get to episode 20 or so, it's gets damn good. I've been watching the english dub (i'm just too damn lazy to read subs, plus it takes away from enjoying the animation methinks), and I think that is up to around ep 95 or so.

The characters, for the most part, are all badass and crack me up. Not sure if I have a favorite character. I always get a kick out of Kenpachi and that little girl who is always with him. Byakuya is also a fav, simply cause he kicks so much ass.

Can't wait till the dub gets back to the manga story!

It's a pretty good show, I'm following it as it comes out. I generally tend to be really selective when it comes to this type of anime and while Bleach hasn't been as good as other ones I've seen it's kept me thouroughly entertained aside from some annoying dry patches of filler episodes that aren't as interesting as the actual storyline. The filler is passable at least though, unlike other series. If I watch shounen series (of which Bleach is one of which are targeted twards teenagers) I've found I like the more complex and darker ones for instance aside from Bleach, I'm also a fan of D.Gray-Man, Claymore, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto: Shippuden, and Rurouni Kanshin as well.

I suppose it's only natural though that I'd prefer more mature series, considering I'm 26 and a guy, so I tend to go for Seinen series which are aimed at male college people and adults. These are generally more meaningful or complex titles which offen have an older cast, and can sometimes contain more graphic violence or more sexual related content or humor. Like a PG13, or an R rating, content-wise.

One thing I've noticed, and I mean no offense, is that some people don't realize anime is an entire medium and caters to all age groups and sexes. Even if one doesn't like the anime artstyle of huge eyes, etc. there are a large number of alternative variants of the animation style which can be more or less realistic. I think it's a fairly easy asumption to make if all one sees are the things that get television broadcasts but there are far more genres of shows available to the DVD consumer who's willing to rent or buy. For instance soapy romantic dramas like Rumbling Hearts, mind bending psychological and philosophical exploration titles like Paprika, or slice of life, character dramas like Haibane Renmei. So, I'm of the opinion that there is an anime for everyone if they care look hard enough or can take suggestions. I'll admit that all anime is not created equal, there's good ones, bad ones, ugly ones...even some that are bad and ugly but still good. :)

If you want to watch shows that are geared more twards adults (which you might possiblly like as well) I could give you some suggestions. Some of them wouldn't be family friendly for your daughter though although I could probabally think of a few of those too.

Anyhow back to Bleach the best portions of it in in my opinion have been the serious arcs. The Soul Society rescue portion and the Hueco Mundo arc have contained the most character development as well the most interesting edge-of-your-seat battles I saw in a while.

I liked it at the start but got bored during the Bount arc & just havent bothered to watch it again. But Im not a big fan of shonen series style anyway...

I am terrible with names at the best time and remembering most of these Japanese names is still very difficult for me. But, yes, I also like the captain of squad 4 very much as well as the brave guy from that same squad who helped to save Rukia.

I have seen all Bleach episodes at least once except the very latest movie "Fade to Black". Each Wednesday I am trying to get the latest one as quickly as possible. I have the two British versions of the first two season DVD box sets as well as the second US one. (The first one seemed to have got lost in the post and we are trying to sort this out).

I bought the Manga book box with the first 21 books as well as the other ones available so far in the USA and Britain. Being a German I am SO tempted to get the next books from Amazon.de because for some reason Germany is MUCH farer with translating these books. But I better wait. I already spent a small fortune on Bleach stuff and my space is limited.

Germany usually releases the manga monthly until they catch up to the japanese versions, while english and american publishers have a slower pace from the start, usually one book every 2 or 3 months.

If you like "Bleach", you should check out "One Piece" (Germany is up to Vol. 49 of the manga, the english version is only up to vol. 19, so if you like it, don't even bother with the english translation, if you can read german). It's similar in style to Bleach, it starts out slow, with smaller adventures while the first crewmembers are assembled, but after the first few volumes it kicks the snot out of Bleach (and I say that as a Bleach fan), the backstories of the characters are surprisingly deep for a shonen manga and the author never runs out of ideas, after 50 books I still can't wait for the next chapter to be released, it's that awesome!
Sadly One Piece was mishandled in the english speaking world and doesn't have the fan base it deserves, the first 144 episodes of the anime were butchered by 4Kids (they're now released uncut with a new dub on DVD by Funimation), it never had a chance.:klingon:

The Soul Society rescue portion is definitely one of my favourites, too. The Hueco Mundo arc is more of a mixed bag to me. Yes, some of these battles are amazing. Especially watching the three of the most powerful characters, Ichigo, Kempachi and Byakuya, it was breath taking sometimes. The battle between Ichida and this Mengele character, Captain Kurotsucih in the Soul Society chapter is one of my favourite parts. I think the Hueco Mundo arc could have made so much more of the story when Ichida and this creepy, evil captain scientist met again. I had very mixed feelings. I could see the funny side but it felt wrong. This was the wrong place for humour and felt inappropriate. Also, I had to wonder, was that really all? No side effects and everything is well?

Bleach is a bit confusing. I noticed that the whole Bounto chapter seems to be left out of the books. The Hueco Mundo chapter on TV had been interrupted by what I call the Princess chapter and continued afterwards with Hueco Mundo. Now there is a break again. I must admit, I enjoyed the game story a lot but I hope the series will go back continuing the overall story soon.

When Captain Kurotsucih`s assistant tossed the rock with Peshe and the rest of that lot away I actually shouted “thank you”! My daughter loved some of the parts with Peshe. Some of it was indeed funny but most of the time it was just annoying. I must admit, I actually fast forwarded most parts that had anything to do with Mel and her history. It didn`t interest me and I had enough.

I enjoy D.Gray-Man a lot but that is definitely not suitable for my six-year-old daughter. We only allowed her to watch one episode that was about a group of children playing pirates and a demon ghost ship. That one was a light episode for a change and she loved it. So far I have watched about half of that series. So far, so good… If I am happy with the way the series ends, I might start buying the DVDs and books.

I don`t know the other series you mentioned. I will probably ask my husband later.

My daughter loved Pokemon when she was a bit younger and when it was on TV in Britain it was accompanied by "One Piece". What I have seen of it just put me off. I might give it another chance if my husband thinks it is worth it.

That was the 4Kids dub and believe me, it's impossible not to be put off by that, that happens if you take a show aimed at young teens and try to turn it into something for little kids by throwing out half the content, complete story arcs and heavily edit what is left (4Kids edited so much content out, that the 143 episodes they dubbed were turned into 104!). Just imagine what would be left of Bleach, if everything resembling violence or character development was taken out, if weapons were edited to look like "funny" hammers etc.,
Of course it's still possible you might not like the uncut show, but at least then you know that the real version is not for you or your husband.

If you're german you should check out "Monster" by Naoki Urasawa, it's probably nothing that you expect a manga/anime to be like, the art style is very realistic, no big eyes etc.. It's definitely not for kids, it's a story about a Doctor who pursues a serial killer and it takes place mostly in Germany in the 1980s. If you've ever been to Duesseldorf, you will probably recognize a few locations. It's a great story, but only people who actually know Germany can really grasp how much research was done, they even show the old yellow phone booths and the correct old police cars and uniforms. It really looks like Germany, not the clicheed version consisting of nothing but small villages in the alps, where everyone wears Dirndl, Lederhosen and owns a cow named Zenzie.:guffaw:

As far as Bleach is concerned, I stopped watching the show somewhere around episode 60, I don't know why, but I really prefer tha manga.

Kenpatchi is also kinda cool, he just likes to fight. I like the one captain who hides his head in a bucket for most of the first few seasons!!!

I do like the one villain, the one with the really slanty eyes and white hair.

Interesting. Well, that reminds me of what was done to Star Trek TOS in the German language sometimes when it was glossed over what Spock`s Pon Farr really is.

British television is awful with censorship and I am not only talking about children`s programs. And then they are complaining that people download programs...

I certainly prefer the Manga sometimes when I can see that the TV version has been toned down and often little but I think important character moments are missing. But as much as I enjoy the black and white books, I think there is no substitute to see the colour version and enjoy the music.

On the other hand, I am worried that a lot of what is shown on TV will never be in the books. From what I can see the entire Bounto chapter is missing. It seems the books immediately go from the Soul Society chapter about Rukia`s rescue to the Hueco Mundo part. That would be a real shame.

Yes, he is cool. I am trying to remember a quote from the creepy scientist captain. He said something like "In battle he is like a beast who has been thrown a piece of raw meat."

I must admit, I don`t find the guy with the fox head very interesting. But, yes, Gin is a very interesting character. I can`t wait to find out what the next move of Aizen and his gang will be.

That happens if you produce an anime, that is based on a still running manga. When they catch up to the newest chapters, the producers of the anime have to create new content to fill time until the manga has more chapters out. Sometimes these fillers are good and can actually flesh out the characters, sometimes they are bad and it becomes painfully obvious that the anime is literally just filling time until the real story continues.
I haven't seen enough of the Bleach anime to judge the qualitiy of the fillers, but you seeem to like them, so they can't be that bad.
Other shows can be really bad with fillers, Naruto became almost unwatchable, when they had more than 80 episodes of boring filler in a row, where nothing happened that had any lasting consequences, because they had to keep the same status quo that existed before the filler started.

I don`t know the other series you mentioned. I will probably ask my husband later.

Claymore is one of most violent and serious of shounen series that I've seen. It takes place in a world where monsters called Yoma prey on humans and our only defense is a mysterious organization that has engineered female half-Yoma hybrids to exterminate them called Claymores. The story follows Claire who after going past her limits and comming dangerously close to awakening the monster within her, soon finds herself the target of her own organization. This would not be one to show your daughter but is is really good.

Yu Yu Hakusho follows Yuske Urameshi a bad tempered punk who unexpected dies saving a little boy from being killed by a car. He's given a second chance at life, but finds himself forced into becoming a Spirit Detective, doing the dirty work of the Spirit Realm by taking on threats to world of the living. It's about as violent as Bleach, but the foul language may be an issue.

Naruto Shippuden A sequel series to Naruto which takes place some years after the first series ends. Describing the plot would probabally spoil the first series for you quite a bit. Anyhow, though, I can say that this series is large improvement over the first one. Bleach level violence.

Rurouni Kenshin follows Kenshin Himura, once known as Batosai The Manslayer, an untouchable and ruthless assassin. Kenshin now only lives to atone for all the people he murderered by becoming a wandering samurai. However, when comes accross Kouru Kamiya and her struggling martial arts dojo he decides to stay a while. However, his past as the Batosai has made him some powerful enemies. Bleach level violence.

Thank you, that is very interesting.

I had no idea that the Bounto story is a filler! I think it is very well done and my husband likes is a lot, too.

On the other hand, some episodes definitely smelled like filler to me. But occasionally I don`t mind some lighter fluff stuff inbetween when it is entertaining like the latest two-parter. There are only few filler stories I wasn`t fond of. I think I said that I hate the talking teddy bear!

Hopefully the DVD box sets will publish all episodes including these fillers!

Well, the US made ones will at least VIZ doesn't have a reputation for cutting things out as far as I know. Plus most of the Bount arc has already aired on our TV broadcast of the series here in the US.
