Black-ish

I waited until I saw the second episode to start this thread. I don't like Anthony Anderson as an actor. When he joined Law & Order, I checked out of it for the two years he was on. He is one of those actors you just can't take serious. You laugh at him even when he's trying to deliver serious dialog. Even in his comedies, he always seams to be winking at the camera. So I was ready to just let this pass by, however one night a few weeks ago I caught an extended look at this and it seamed somewhat interesting. So I decided to DVR it and I'm glad I did.

Everything that works again Anthony Anderson works in this. His over the top, bravado is endearing here. The setup for the series is fairly simple, A family man struggles to gain a sense of cultural identity while raising his kids in a predominantly white, upper-middle-class neighborhood. Yet there are layers and social commentaries here that work so well. They feel like a real family, with real issues being dealt with in real ways but completely over the top and for laughs. I love the actress who plays his wife, Tracee Ellis Ross. She is so good and funny. This could be my favorite new show for this year. If you haven't checked it out, I would recommend it highly.

Yup, this is a terrific show with some really great writing.

You should check out another show Anthony Anderson does, this one on the Food Network, "Eating America with Anthony Anderson". Love Food Network, and he visits some great places.

Anyway, I think Black-ish is going to be one of the shows to make it this year.

I thought Anderson was great in the L&O-verse. In both of the roles he played.

(He was on SVU first, but as a different character.)

Another new show I need to watch when time permits!

While I'm not a big fan of Anthony Anderson the comedian, I didn't mind Anthony Anderson the dramatic actor on Law and Order. Obviously, he's going back to his comedy roots with this new show, but from the look and sound of it...that comedy is more clever/witty than buffoonish.

There is a little, tiny bit of buffoonery but not enough to weigh down the show. The writing is excellent and funny as hell. Every once in awhile graphics pop on screen and there is voice over that really ties everything together. You should really give it a watch when you have time.

I agree. The show is great. However, I would like more Laurence Fishburne. He just sort of walks into a scene, says something and then walks out. He's great. I want more.

I'll definitely have to check it out, it's getting really good reviews too.

Usually I'm biased against sitcoms and the associated sentimentality. Does Black-ish have that sentimentality?

Actually the show kind of subverts the sentimentality thing of sitcoms.

Saw the first one, have the second one taped, will watch. If it can stop being all over the place and slow down just a little, it'll be very good indeed.

I remember Melissa Harris-Perry talking about hopes for the show, memories of Cosby, and how she preferred anything by Norman Lear over Tyler Perry

Just saw the first episode. It's funny and clever, but I'm a bit put off by the main character's Michael Scott-style acting out.

That's another thing that rubs me the wrong way about sitcoms. Exaggerated behavior with no long term consequences.

Also abc.com's viewer keeps on covering up the screen with a button to share on Facebook, which I'd never want to do and seems like you can't turn off.

I'm surprised that I'm enjoying a few sitcoms. Black-ish, Selfie (yes, I'm giving it a chance. It's john Cho), and whatever that romcom with the voiceovers (though that's likely the first to go).

I decided to stick with Haven, but am hoping they'll wrap it up and put it out of its misery.

I was able to see the first two episodes, and I enjoyed them. I'm hoping to see some character arcs as the show progresses.

I couldn't help but recall "The Hugley's" which was also on ABC, IIRC. However, that show was a safer sitcom and didn't really do anything different than any other show with a family and a father who comments on the goings on around him. When that show went to UPN, the show went further downhill since the show became basically 30 minutes of D.L. Hugley and Pat Morita (who joined the show) trading racial jibes towards one another.

I digress, though.

"Black-ish" looks to be winner so far.

I'm happy to report that Black-ish won't be the next cancelled show. It has been picked up for the entire season.

I caught episode 3, I can express enough how much I love this show.

I enjoyed the show a lot more than I expected to, it's really funny and the kids are really entertaining characters particularly the little girl.

I do wonder about the message the show sends though. The father is offended that his kids don't see race; isn't our ultimate goal to erase racism?

Black-ish looks like it's going to have the same kind of success as Modern Family.

@Mr Light

Ending racism and erasing cultural identity are two different things.
