Big Bang Theory taps Nimoy for a voice over

I hate how shallow the "nerdy" references in TBBT are, its one of the weaker aspects of the show. The fact is their audience really wouldnt be able to get any non-shallow references. I particularly hated that inane conversations where they had to choose between watching Saturn 3 and Deep Space Nine. It was just set up for a joke about babylon 5 being a compromise (since 5 falls between 3 and 9) but seriously, hearing a "nerd" actually compare a crappy Kirk Douglas 1980 sci-fi movie to a 7 season Star Trek show was so lame and shallow. Not to mention Sheldon's dislike for Babylon 5 which is clearly a beloved show by most hardcore sci-fi fans. I get the impression most of the writers know little about sci-fi.

You're right. Sheldon and Raj should have been arguing about Babyon 5 and Deep Space Nine, and then Leonard should have told them to compromise and watch Blake's 7. :p

It does seem as if the writers don't have much knowledge of sci fi outside of television and films, however, they are making this show for a much wider audience than the hardcore sci fi geeks (cough, cough me). I imagine if the characters spent too much time referencing Dune and Foundation, the wider audience would get bored and switch to something else.

I hate this show. The whole idea seems to be that being very smart or into sci-fi is just funny by itself.

Nah, sorry. You guys have got to learn to laugh at yourselves! Being a geek (and worse yet, a geek girl) all my life I think TBBT is right on the money with the nerds I've known. Plus they don't portray us as being just a bunch of cold hearted nerdniks who care about nothing but science...the kids have heart. And the Babylon 5/ Deep Space Nine thing was hilarious. I've heard people have conversations like this! Ever been to a Star Trek Convention???

Anyway, if anybody from TBBT is on this BBS I have one question for you: WHY ON EARTH JUST HIS VOICE???!!!! C'mon write Leonard INTO the episode. Sheldon would have to go to the hospital if he met Nimoy...and maybe Nimoy would take him to the hospital because he would be guilty for making him pass out....AM I GIVING YOU GUYS SOME IDEAS??? C'mon write it or at least call me!

Leonard Nimoy has basically retired from acting. He's done one episode of Fringe as just a voice and now he's doing The Big Bang Theory. He really has no interest in appearing on camera at this point in his life.

No, the writers don't seem to know much sci-fi, period.

True, not much, but they do get a few things fairly right. I'm not a full out nerd, but have nerd qualities. I find the show hilarious. Tedious and predictable at times, but the good stuff makes it worth holding out for. Jim Parsons is doing a really great job with his role, and based on his aired interviews I've seen I can understand why. ;)

I used to hate it too but it can genuinely be hilarious at times and it has some pretty funny characters. Check out this clip, one of my favorite TBBT moments, and see if you like it

Sheldon attempts meditation
Very funny one -- thanks for posting it. :)

But Babylon 5's a big pile of....../spaced

I saw someone else describe TBBT as originally a show for nerds, but then it became popular so now its a show making fun of nerds.

They've toned down everything from the actual science used in the show to the sci-fi/comic book references, etc.

But you know, at the end of the day, as long as it is funny, does that matter?

Personally, never actually laughed out loud at the show nor worked out why they don't just stop putting up with Sheldon's crap and diagnose him with autism and be done with it, but then I guess there's very little comedy in that :p

Maybe, but if they did cater to real hard-core sci-fi fans, the show wouldn't be as successful....

They may have threw in an obscure sci-fi show to make the characters seem....really geeky. Deep Space Nine isn't all that well known. Blake 7 even less so, especially since many of the viewers were either not born or too young to remember that show...

Otherwise, they would have used the original Star Trek and Star Wars....

TBBT is probably the funniest show on TV at the moment, wheather you think it's laughing 'with' or 'at' you.

And B5 had some very impressive things about it - JMS writing most of it, the relatively high production values on a budget and the long serious story arc.

Unfortunately, outside of Katsulas, Jurasik and Furst it had probably the worst cast of actors ever gathered together in one show and ripped off Lord Of The Rings for a plot.

Beloved ? Hardly...

Can't wait for Nimoy!

You know, lots of true scifi fans don't like Babylon 5...me, for example. And I know geekier geeks than me who don't like it, either. So I'm saying that's not a particularly valid test. There is, after all, more than one kind of nerd. That's part of the joke, you know - scifi nerds arguing with each other. And that's a joke that's absolutely true to life, too. They could have made it Trek vs. Star Wars, but instead they made Sheldon a B5 hater. Why not?

And BTW, you guys may think they've toned down the scifi references, and maybe they have. But I can tell you that I know at least four TBBT fans who - get this - don't understand many of the scifi references, particularly the Trek ones. Sometimes they ask me for a translation. Not getting all of the jokes is the price they're willing to pay for laughs, and if they can put up with references that they don't get, surely we should be able to put up with fewer geek references.
