Beyond questions

Lieutenant Commander

1. How is the ancient technology able to work through the apparent long range communication blackout experienced by the enterprise?

2. Why is it that, the latest federation universal translator takes HOURS or possibly a day, to "figure out" the womans language, when she was originally from Edisons crew, and thus, from a federation era that was the basic library of languages for Starfleet?

3. No one on the enterprise seems to realize that the females ship, is identical to the swarm ships that are ripping the enterprise apart?

4. if the robots are supposed to capture the enterprise crew intact, then why do their weapons only have a kill setting?

5. if it requires massive conduits thicker in diameter then scotty to send plasma from the warp core to the nacelles, how can he send plasma from the warp core to the impulse engines using a garden hose?

6. how the crap could impulse engines operate as warp nacelles?

7. how the hell would Edison FORGET where the Franklin wreckage was? SERIOUSLY. a soldier doesn't forget his last commands grave.

8. if it was sooo easy to fix the franklin... why couldn't Edison figure that out and fix it once he had taken control of the swarm ships?

9. If the planet was barren desert rock, why was bones attacked by some lonely dudes in a small forest grotto?

10. If jayla was from a different ship that was lured in and attacked and destroyed, what happened to the wreckage of that?

1. They stole and re-purposed the Federation's Gagarin probes, which they used in an attempt to chart the nebula.

2. It took five seconds.

3. It's a completely different design.

4. I guess because they wanted some of them alive but didn't care too much.

5. I'm pretty sure Scotty rewired everything in TOS with similar cables in his little Jefferies tube.

6. They didn't and weren't supposed to.

7. I didn't think he did. It was abandoned in favour of far better technology. I thought Jaylah's cloaking field was to prevent other alien scavengers from finding it.

8. Why would he want to, once he had the swarm? Only three of his crew survived anyway - none of whom had the skills of Jaylah or Scotty.

9. Scotty. And the planet had forrests as well as quarries, and probably loads more besides just like Earth.

10. Who knows? Presumably it was in worse shape than the Franklin. Or perhaps was destroyed entirely and the crew made it down in escape pods.

It seems like the two of you are referring to different movies.

when the Enterprise gets into orbit, before the attack, all the screens show is a desert planet with nothing but large under ground carverns.

6. how the crap could impulse engines operate as warp nacelles?

ANS: There are 3 major components to a warp engine, 2 nacelles that generate a warp field, and a warp core that generates the immense power required. The 2 nacelles were cut off, but the warp core is still fully functional. Scotty just transferred power generated by the warp core to the impulse engines. With the impulse engines now at full power, the ship didn't go to warp as they are not nacelles. The Enterprise just flew away at it's fastest sublight speed.

7. how the hell would Edison FORGET where the Franklin wreckage was? SERIOUSLY. a soldier doesn't forget his last commands grave.
8. if it was sooo easy to fix the franklin... why couldn't Edison figure that out and fix it once he had taken control of the swarm ships?

ANS: He did not forget, he abandoned the ship and just wasn't interested in it anymore as it is a product of the Federation which he hates.

4. if the robots are supposed to capture the enterprise crew intact, then why do their weapons only have a kill setting?

ANS: The planet was once an alien mining colony but had long been abandoned. The alien swarm were once mining drones designed for drilling through hard rock. The underground caverns were tunnels dug up by the mining drones. It also explains why the drones were able to easily shear off the Enterprise's nacelles and neck section. Krall simply took over control of the abandoned drones, but did not or could not alter it's technology and functions.

1. How is the ancient technology able to work through the apparent long range communication blackout experienced by the enterprise?

It's ancient, so better. And it probably is supposed to, in the first place. Why would the Ancients agree to live separated from the rest of the universe by an impenetrable nebula/asteroid field/jamming field? Wrong question - they probably arranged for that splendid isolation in the first place! But left themselves enough loopholes to peek out through.

That Edison only made good contact with the outside world after exploiting the Gagarin probes is likely to tell us more about the non-Anciedness of this character than anything else. Edison simply wasn't the master of all available Ancient technologies from the get-go, and probably didn't know how to run half of it even during the events of the movie.

2. Why is it that, the latest federation universal translator takes HOURS or possibly a day, to "figure out" the womans language, when she was originally from Edisons crew, and thus, from a federation era that was the basic library of languages for Starfleet?

There is no particular reason to think that she would have been from Edison's crew. But either way, surely her language would have been deliberately engineered to be as alien-sounding as possible, to throw off Starfleet.

3. No one on the enterprise seems to realize that the females ship, is identical to the swarm ships that are ripping the enterprise apart?

It isn't.

But even if it bore a resemblance, it would merely confirm her "second level" backstory of having escaped carnage in the hands of these horrible enemies.

4. if the robots are supposed to capture the enterprise crew intact, then why do their weapons only have a kill setting?

The drones weren't built to capture people - why would their weapons have capture settings? Edison just uses them for the purpose the best he can. He doesn't need thousands of people alive, and can settle for the hundreds that are left when the resisting individuals are gunned down.

5. if it requires massive conduits thicker in diameter then scotty to send plasma from the warp core to the nacelles, how can he send plasma from the warp core to the impulse engines using a garden hose?

Because FTL consumes about a zillion times more power than STL (say, because it takes that much to break some of the more fundamental laws of nature)?

Not convinced that the thing he connected was a "plasma conduit", tho. Probably just a control cable necessary for activating the systems that pump power to the engines through some other route.

6. how the crap could impulse engines operate as warp nacelles?

They don't.

7. how the hell would Edison FORGET where the Franklin wreckage was? SERIOUSLY. a soldier doesn't forget his last commands grave.

He doesn't.

8. if it was sooo easy to fix the franklin... why couldn't Edison figure that out and fix it once he had taken control of the swarm ships?

It wasn't. Plus, leaving the planet was never a problem for him: see him leave through the "impenetrable" nebula with trivial ease when he acctually does. He just wasn't interested in leaving, because he wanted to prepare his eeeevil plan of revenge first.

9. If the planet was barren desert rock, why was Scotty attacked by some lonely dudes in a small forest grotto?

It was a planet. Obviously it had different climes - the farther away from Krall, the more of those captives there would be alive and around.

10. If jayla was from a different ship that was lured in and attacked and destroyed, what happened to the wreckage of that?

The same as to the dozens, hundreds or perhaps thousands of other ships attacked that way. Exploited by Krall, or then left lying around because Krall had no use for them. The planet was probably littered by debris like that - it's not as if our heroes ever put a word in edgewise.

I thought that Jaylah and her family weren't captured from a ship but rather from one of the near planets Krall went to and captured people from.
