Hello Everyone!!! New to the forum. Big fan of all the series except DSN. Not to thrilled with that one. Anyway. I did a search and can't an answer tomy question, maybe you can help.

When beaming to a planet or to a potentially unknown/dangerous situation, why did the away team NOT stand in a circle with each member facing OUT with phasers ready? Instead, they all of faced one way and drew phasers once the transport was done?

Surely someone, somewhere, somehow caught this!!!

I'm not sure, but I'd say it was because they (the writers/directors) were trying to convey a spirit of trust towards the people/place they were about to encounter in the beginning, but then it became more of a tradition, so even when they did go to hostile locations they still all stood the same direction, although there are occasions where the go with their phasers drawn.
 
Probably the same reason that on other television shows, when a family is setting at a table eating, they always all set scruched together on one side with the chairs on the other side empty. :lol:
 
They actually did do that at least once. They did it in TNG's "Best of Both Worlds" when they beamed over to the Borg ship. There may have been a couple other occurrences, but I can't think of any more at the moment.
 
With scanners able to let them know of any potential danger around them, I don't think they would need to be that cautious. As others pointed out, it seems they have, on occasion done that when they were beaming into a potentially dangerous situation.

And I third the notion that if you gave DS9 another try, you would see it's greatness.
 
Ok. Let me get this straight. Godben wants me to be thick skinned and Misfit Toy wants me to "tattle".

I make a first post saying hello and attempting to start an innocent discussion about something as insignificant as which way they stand when beaming down, I get a couple of smart ass answers from other members and it gets "explained" to me that I shouldn't respond in kind.

Holy crap guy, lighten up. You can't take people that seriously around here. Like GodBen says, you have to have a thick skin. Hell, half of the stuff I post draws criticism and smart-assedness, but I don't get all pissed off about it.

Nobody is attacking you or trying to be a jerk, they are trying to be friendly. People are just joking around, that goes on a lot around here. You are making a mountain out of a molehill...

Go back and read your messages..YOU are the one that started being a bit hostile by accusing someone of being a smartass when they clearly weren't trying to be. All they did was suggest you give DS9 another chance, they didn't say you sucked for not liking it or anything..

Seriously, compared to most message boards you see people here are quite friendly and polite. There are a few jerks for sure, but that is life.
