Best Way to Lose a Gut?

Mr Light

What's the most effective exercise/dieting way to loose a beer belly? I'm not fat except there, it just all goes right to my gut for some reason. And it's not beer I don't even drink alcohol! :p

Stomach crunches? Walking/jogging? Constant tantric sex?

It goes straight to your gut because that's just where fat collects on men. With women it's the thighs and butt.

Best way to get rid of it: cardio and fewer calories. Ab exercises (sit-ups, crunches) will do nothing to get rid of the fat, but they might help you have decent abs once the fat is gone.

You gotta burn more calories than you consume in order to lose fat. That means less food, more aerobic exercise. And do you drink a lot of soda? It's usually one of the biggest culprits.

I drink a lot of soda actually, as I never thought a liquid drink with no fat calories could be fattening. Shows what I know ;) I DID just buy a Diet Dr Pepper to try it out for the taste.

What exactly does cardio mean?

Rojohen is right on all counts. I would like to add that you should try to maintain a balanced diet. forget fad diets or supplements, they are worthless. Properly maintaining a balance of carbs, fat, and protein is ESSENTIAL to loosing weight AND staying that way. and Yes, soda will most certainly make you fat if you don't burn off those Calories. ANY food will make you fat if too much is consumed. The key is moderation, no food is really off limits, it is quantity of food that matters; a small bowl of ice cream or a glass of soda is fine as long it is not taken to excess.

Not to call you stupid, Mr. Light, I am glad to see you taking interest in your own health, but these topics show how many people don't understand basic nutrition. I blame the fad diet industry mostly for spreading misinformation. A little research, a bit of logic, and some help from friends would solve a lot of problems people have with diets. It is good you are taking the steps to know more, Mr. Light

I wouldn't look too much at Fat Calories for drinks. As you can read in the other Calories thread, Fat that you eat doesn't necessarily create Body Fat. Soda has a lot of sugar, and excess sugar will make you fat real quick.

Cardio...aerobic exercise. Stuff like walking, jogging, biking, and swimming.

Compared to anaerobic exercise, like weight lifting. Although weight lifting is great, too, as muscle helps to burn fat.

Excellent advice. You win the thread.

Also, a good way to eat fewer calories (in addition to cutting out soft drinks) is to stop eating out. You tend to eat healthier if you made the food at home yourself.

Exactly about cooking at home. by making food your self you also tend to use less salt which, in high quantities, tends to inhibit weight loss.

Like I said before, no food should be considered "off limits" but care and logic should be applied to how much is consumed.

I read somewhere that if the average American cut soda out of their diet entirely, while doing nothing else differently, they'd lose 5-10 pounds in a year.

I don't know why people drink that stuff, it's just empty calories. I don't think people realize how many calories you can drink. Even milk and juice, which have nutritional value, are high in calories.

Hmm, so I guess my usual meals of pizza and meatball subs are bad enh? :p It's just so hard to find anything healthy remotely interesting to eat. Basically cereal with skim milk is the only low calorie thing I enjoy. Also I eat italian ice usually for desert.

How bad is spaghetti?

If you will be running a marathon, then spaghetti is great, if not, give it a pass.

"Healthy food" doesn't have to be bland or boring. People are so accustomed to fat and salt being the primary flavors of their foods that they forget that there is a whole world of herbs and spices that are so much better than fat and salt. you can also make healthier versions of your favorite foods too. use low fat cheese and more veggies when making pizza. Instead of using beef to make meatballs, use half turkey half firm tofu, I swear to you that it is tastes exactly the same.

I'd like to re-iterate that exercise is no alternative to cutting out calories.

Compare this table:

Activity Calories/hour of non-stop exercise
Walking 300
Bicycling 300
Aerobics 400
Swimming 400
Tennis 500
Basketball 500
Jogging 700

With this table:

Tasty Treat Calories
Peanut butter sandwich 275
Pizza (3 slices) 500
Big Mac 560

The second thing to keep in mind is that foods high in calories are almost invariably the ones that are 'enjoyable' or 'give a lot of satisfaction'. You shouldn't try to find low-calorie foods you enjoy--you should try to adjust your expectations of the amount of enjoyment you get from food.

Meh, probably nothing wrong with a meatball sub.

But really, you need to be ACTIVE! Get that metabolism working.

I personally have been doing a lot of stairs. I think Ive been doing about 200 stairs a day since september-sh and have lost about 15 pounds; most of those pounds being from my stomach.

Yeah my big problem is I get a lot less exercise in my regular lifestyle. In college, I walked two hours a day every day, to classes, to the sub shop which was quite a distance away from my dorm. Now the only walking I do is to my parking spot which is a block away from my apartment. Once it stops being so cold outside I hope to start walking around.

I think these are some of the most insightful words I've encountered on the subject of weight loss/sensible eating etc.

For me (maybe not for you or for everybody), I saw quick results with direct stomach exercises, rather than walking/jogging.

I know of 2 good exercises. One works on your lower back and stomach which is important becuse you want balance. Its called a Prone Bridge. You just get on your elbows and toes and try to hold that position for 1 minute. It sometimes help to stick your butt in the air a little bit, but you'll feel the burn soon. I would start off with 3 reps with 1 minute each. Do this once a week and see how you feel.

The second exercise is leg lifts. You basically lie flat on the ground and lift both your legs up at a 45 degree angle. Then you lift your right leg a little higher, hen your left leg a little higher, then your right leg a little higher, (sorta like kicking while swimming) but always returning to the 45 degree position. You repeat this (while always maintaining both legs at a 45 degree angle) about 10 times for 1 set. Never at any point during each set do you let your legs touch the ground. Try doing 3 sets once week.

If you are sore the next day, you did them correctly. Oh and do some stretching before each exercise. Don't wanna pull anything.

If you will be running a marathon, then spaghetti is great, if not, give it a pass.

Could I get more details on this please? Spaghetti (or other noodles) is something I eat almost every other day. Usually the whole-wheat or 7-grain kind. Is that bad?

I'm also curious about the statement that high salt can inhibit weight loss. I've always had a low-sodium condition, so I'm never sure just how much salt restrictions really apply to me, but I do eat a lot of it.

It goes straight to your gut because that's just where fat collects on men. With women it's the thighs and butt.

A large percentage of women build it in the waist also. A recent survey of over 4000 women paid for by retail merchants discovered that the average waist size for women is 34" and that only 15% of women have the hourglass shape that is depicted as the ideal.

Noodles are complex carbs. For a marathon runner, eating some pasta is great because it will provide long-lasting energy for the race.

But if you're not very active, pasta can easily make you gain fat.

Hmm. Maybe I'll try making it every three days, then.

One of my common snacks is sourdough pretzels---you know, the ones that come in a bin. Assuming I'm not concerned about the salt, any potential harm there?
