Best series

Hi guys, im new to the forum, so sorry if this is done to death. I was just wondering how any of you can possibly consider the original star trek as the best. Ok it may have been the first but thats about all it has going for it. Captain Janeway was the best captain ever, on the best ship ever. How can anyone think otherwise?

My fingers are gonna' hurt if I start typing any serious responses here. Mind if I share some of that popcorn?

uhhh..... Never watched the original, but if it wasn't there the others wouldn't have followed so I'll give my props.. But as much as I like voyager and Janeway..... have you ever watched DS9 cause I think Sisko and the Defiant would have kicked Voyagers ass

When I was in 4th Grade I remember a big discussion one day involving some of my very worldly classmates about which were better: Ford trucks or Chevy trucks.
For some reason, I am always reminded of that debate whenever I hear or read certain kinds of statements made on these boards! :)

Well, in all seriousness, "best" is obviously a subjective term. I happen to like all of the ST series because they have so many great qualities in common - excellent writing (for the most part), well developed characters, action and adventure in sufficient quantity, and a generally very optimistic view of humankind's future. So, it really comes down to which characters and setting happen to turn you on the most.

The one thing I don't get is when people pan the hell out of one series or another. I understand that some folks aren't big fans of TOS, for example, but I don't get how a lot of those people deride it like it's the worst television show that ever aired.

Captain Kirk, the original TOS series, when the men really acted like men...and the women were allowed to be real women...

:wtf:

Sitting around the bridge laughing at Spock at the end of many TOS episodes... yeah, real men.

And how was Yeoman Rand, Uhura and Nurse Chapel real women compared to the ladies of latter trek?

Spock often insulted them back twice is good as they did him, I love Kirk, but without Spock he was nothing, they were a team...same thing with Bones...and yes Uhura was a strong woman, Yeoman Rand was a sweet lady, Nurse Chapel had a distinct personality, they acted like a woman with self pride, not a woman pretending to be a man...

Actually, most fans here consider Next Generation to be the best. Unfortunately, TNG really hasn't aged well (IMO). I believe many fans remember it as fantastic in large measure because at the time, it was the only game in town.

But I do agree with the post above that had it not been for TOS... :bolian:

I think Jean Luc is the best. I love me some Janeway. But Picard is the best. (imho!)

I have a coworker who loves Voyager. She told me that she has been watching Star Trek since the very beginning (I believe her,) and that Voyager was the show she had been waiting her whole life to watch. She would watch it with her daughters, and used it to encourage them in science, math, military, etc.

My personal favorite is TNG. I love everything about it, and it was one of my great escapes as a child. That background thrum of the engines makes me feel at home whenever I hear it, and just thinking of the carpet in the corridors and bridge and turbolift makes me smile. Clean carpet, soft steps, traction. I love how the main crew are like a family; it is almost like The Waltons sometimes. I love the utopian vision of Starfleet and the Federation.

DS9 hands down! The characters weren't pretentious like in other series...! They got some shit going down and at the end of the day I don't feel like the only freak in town! [chuckle] I guess the other series was too preachy... It's like, either you are with us or you are against us. It's more black and white with the others, especially Voy and TNG. When you look at DS9 you can feel for every characters. You can see where they all are coming from and really nobody wants to be on the wrong end of the stick. It didn't really try to divide people and label them somehow. Every character has there strength and moments and also their dark sides. It wasn't really trying to point the fingers but really people trying to understand each other so they can mingle. There were different shades of greys, not as clear as night and day. If you really open your mind and listen to some of the people who are considered...maybe egotistical like General McAurther and President Nixon...some of the stuff do make sense eventhough you might find something deemed reprehensible and unethical. You can see they were trying to do the right thing and they thought they were, which is what a lot of people do, not just them. I think people like to ignore the fact that they are humans, too, and capable of kindness and compation just like you or I because they fear they are just like them if not exactly like them. They do care in their own strange ways even if the world doesn't understand them. Where would a lot of those people be if they didn't have people like them to demonized, which just goes to say...they fear them because they see themselves when they look at them or read about them...

I want to say I love them all but definitely TNG first and foremost. Grew up watching it so it was basically ingrained into my mind from a very young age :P.

Yeah, God knows what watching The Naked Now had done to the little kids who first saw it in 1987.
