So I was looking over my Trek-on-DVD collection, and I was wondering what the best DVD packaging of the North American (I'm in Canada, so I only have the US/Canada releases) releases is?
You can pick what you would consider the Top 3 package layouts. This poll doesn't include the software parts of the DVD's, such as menu's and how the episodes are arranged or the versions of the episodes (i.e. TOS original vs. TOS remastered). This poll is about the outer packaging. One thing though, I am not including the "Complete Series" releases that were originally released in the early-2000's of the first 6 series that only put a cardboard tray under the individual sets. Also I'm not including "Best of" collections, like the Fan collections. Also, Blu-Ray's are not included in this poll, although, personally, the Blu-Ray packaging for all the series has been-meh, since they use the standard Blu-Ray case with a cardboard slipcover over top, where as the DVD releases have seen some interesting packaging choices.
For me, my Top 3 DVD packaging series are: Star Trek The Next Generation 2002 Box Sets, Star Trek The Animated Series 2006 Box Set and the 2005 Star Trek Enterprise Box Sets. With those three, their packaging just "jumps" off the shelf, since they are so different from the others. The 40-disc TOS collection is all just standard DVD cases, and then the 2004 and Remastered 2006 sets are different, but they don't have that eye appeal. DS9's 2003 sets I would give an honorable mention to, as I like the number on the sides of the DVD sets, but the hard plastic is starting to get very brittle almost 20 years on now, and some of the sets are looking the worst for wear with scotch tape holding the plastic together. The Voyager 2004 sets, is so-so, and out of the first wave of TV show releases (1999-2006), feels like the cheapest packaging out there. However, since then I've found the releases have been rather generic and really don't stand out.
