Best Car Insurance Company?

I don't know what the best company is but it's definitely not State Farm.

The exact opposite experience. I've been with State Farm for over 35 years in 3 different states and been very pleased.

The same here, only it's 32 years for me. They've always been good to deal with. However admittedly I have not shopped rates.

I will tell you this, one time I was hit by a Progressive insured driver. I was EXTREMELY impressed with the speed and proffessionalism at which their company handled the claim. So much so that if I were to ever leave State Farm, they would be my first choice.

For auto, GEICO has been nothing but good to me so far....

now their ads on the other hand...

USAA is a great company, though.... And they mail me a check back every year when their claims aren't as high as projected. Even recently with shitty economic conditions, I'm still getting the rebate checks! :)

Hey, now that's a great deal. :techman:

More generally, it seems from this thread that the US car insurance market is largely cornered by a handful of big companies. Fair impression or just small thread sample size? The UK has loads of them, enough that dedicated comparison websites have sprung up like confused.com - you stick your details in once and it compares across 30+ different companies for the cheapest quote and the major policy details of each. Does the USA have anything similar to allow a quick comparison?

I didn't realize there were so many insurance companies.

I work for GEICO, but I'll try to give some impartial advice.

1) ALWAYS get multiple quotes and compare prices across companies.

2) Understand what you're getting. Otherwise you might get something like this: "I bought a DS at Best Buy for way cheaper than Toys R Us is selling Playstations!"

That's easy to do in the insurance world. Make sure you understand what you're getting.

3) Allstate, Sate Farm, GEICO, and Progressive are the 4 largest. (Have to be fair, yes, USAA is a great company too.) Now, bigger doesn't always mean better, but it's more likely you won't find yourself someplace your company has a tough time reaching you. (Bragging moment -> Of the 4, GEICO is growing the fastest right now. Lots of people are comparing prices and then going with us these days. Ok, bragging over.)

4) Ask everyone what you'd do after an accident. GEICO has put together a bunch of Enterprise car rental places at repair shops so it's all a 1-stop experience. (We call it Auto Xpress.) Be sure to ask others if they do things like that and if it's common or just a few locations.

Ask again if you have more specific questions, but these are the basics.

Is the Esurance lady also Kim Possible?

I dunno, that Esurance looks way too hip/trendy for me, a self-described square.
