Actually, I think the whole point was that space exploration for Earth was so new that NOBODY was fully prepared for it, and had to really gain their space legs on the job.
And THAT I'm fine with. But he didn't come off as a leader at all. To me, anyway, which is what I meant.
Exactly sbk1234. The whole point with Archer's character was that he was nothing like the polished gem that Kirk or Picard were when we first saw them.
Archer had to develop his skills, including leadership skills, on the job. He started out thinking that space exploration was going to be an adventure, that it would be nothing but fun. When he realized that it was actually very dangerous business, he changed (albeit slowly). He began to grow into the sort of captain we were used to. If ENT had been allowed to go on for seven seasons, I'm sure he would have been just like Kirk or Picard by the end.
IMO, Bakula got that right off the bat. I never had any problem with his acting.
