Ben, Jacob, and others (Spoilers)

In season 3, Juliet is told that her sister would die of cancer if she left the island, but Jacob would heal her if she stayed. Obviously, Ben is a manipulative bastard, so he probably was lying (especially when you consider his lack of communion with Jacob and his eventual lack of faith). But it does seem to parallel in some ways Dogen's story. Dogen was supposed to go to the island with the promise that Jacob would heal his son and he could never leave (or heal his son). The difference was that Jacob personally visited him.

I'm not saying that Juliet's situation could be real too. I think the weight of the evidence is that Ben made it up. But it's quite possible that Ben knew of Dogen's story and decided to recreate it for his deception (the best fraud has to resemble the truth). No way to know for sure, though, unless we hear what Ben has to say about Dogen (if he says anything, which I hope he does, since he clearly knew about the Temple back in season 3).

Despite Ben's relationship with Jacob, he still had access to a lot of knowledge. He knew about the time travel wheel, summoning the smoke monster, and most importantly the magic box. If the magic box were anything, I'd imagine it's analogous to the offers that Jacob and Smokey have given Dogen and Sayid. Somehow the island is or contains this power, and that is what truly needs protection. It's possible that Jacob protects this, and now Smokey is trying to get it.

Do we know anything about the hierachy of the others? Is Ben higher up than Dogan? Who is more senior between Dogan and Richard?

Well everything we've seen and been told so far, puts Ben as the leader of the Others, up until he moved (and left) the Island, then Locke became the leader.

Richard seems to be the assistant to the leader "for life".

Dogen, just seemed to be the Temple's boss. But probably still under Ben's/Locke's (or whoever the leader at the time is) orders.

There was also the Sheriff that we saw in season three. She had a lot of power and influence over the Other's, but she still took orders from Ben. I wonder whatever happened to her?

And also remember there are probably still lots and lots of Others off the Island currently. Some one has to be running the Biowork(?) offices "outside of Portland" plus all of the other projects the Other's have going on across the globe, like the summer camp for gifted youngsters, and other things they have been doing. Plus the allies of the Others (the lady running the Butcher shop in LA), whatever is going on in Ontario (some of the Other's were supposed to be there working on something).

So there has to be a lot of "management" in the Others organization, but it seems Ben was the leader for most of the recent time.

Ben still received communication from Jacob via Richard, such as the lists. It's quite possible that he received word of a deal Jacob was willing to strike to keep Juliet on the Island through Richard.

She was killed offscreen in the S3 finale.

Really? I don't remember the Other's being in any sort of conflict at the end of season three. Except the attack team that raided the beach camp, and I don't think an old lady like her would have been part of Tom's elite group sent to kill off the Losties.

They said in interviews that she was one of the 10 strongest sent to the beach in the raid. I guess they couldn't get the actress back.
