Being extra un-lucky in the Cyprus disaster...

I don't know how many of you have followed the accidental explosion, caused by the ignition of a couple of containers full of gunpowder that had been confiscated from an Iranian ship months ago, in a Naval Base in Cyprus [link]. As the video in the link I posted roughly shows, the explosion was very big. 12 people were killed, 60+ were injured and a nearby electric power station was destroyed.

The people killed included the commander of the base, firefighters and three young (just over 18 years old) sailors that were serving their mandatory service in the armed forces.

Something that just came into my attention is that two of those young men were twins [link]!

Of course, my heart goes out to all the people who lost their loved ones so suddenly and unfairly. But most of all, I can't stop but feeling extremely sorry for the poor family who lost two young boys at once! It seems so cruel.

My best thoughts for them and the people of Cyprus as they strangle to cope with the disaster.

That's awful. I'm surprised there's no military policy against siblings serving together like that. :(

And there are probably some elements in Iran who are getting a big kick out of this.

probably an errant cigarette ash, or someone forgot to "ground" the containers due to chance of a spark / static charge in an extra-dry climate, especially that close to a power station. Or neglected to get the ignitable items out of direct heat of the sun and into a cooler shady bunker / garage near an A/C fan. shit...

To Prime Minister Harper: please lower all Canadian flags to half-mast in honor of these losses.
