Become a Lord/Lady

I've just come across some websites where you pay money to purchase a plot of land on a royal estate (as small as 1 square foot or as large as 1000 square foot) and apparently this entitles you to call yourself a Lord or lady.

Heres one

and here's another

I mean who honestly falls for this stuff? who would be stupid enough to actually go to the bank and try to change their title on their accounts and cards to Lord or Lady?

There must be several thousand lords and ladys being created every day. :guffaw:

Yeah, they sell naming rights to stars, too... and the names are published in an actual book!

I believe that you can buy titles. Some folks have several and sell off a couple to raise cash. I'm not sure that buying a scrap of land on an estate will entitle you, though.

So...what can I do with my land? If I buy 1 square foot, can I build a tiny castle on it? With a moat?

If I am to be a Lord, I feel like I should have a moat.

Djibrilie(sp) Cisse the former Liverpool football player is 'Lord of the Manor of Frodhsam' because he bought said manor house. it's similar BS to this, i spect.

A sand castle? probably yes.

If you buy 1000 sq foot you can do something with it but you've got to get planning permission. If you do buy 1000 sq foot you are allowed to pitch a tent on your land and camp there.

If you make a driveway, you won't have room to build anything else.

^What about a Lego castle?

Might need planning permission because it involves bricks. :p

Holy crap man, that's a thought. Has anyone ever tried building a full blown house with lego bricks (the small kiddy kind)? I wonder if you would indeed need planning permission? I'M GOING TO DO IT!!!!!!! if I win the lottory. ;)

I have no doubt that someone has attempted it. Hell, I'd do it if I had a shit ton of money and an equal amount of free time.

Believe it or not, here in the states, I'm pretty sure you don't need a permit to build something that not only doesn't have a foundation but isn't held together with any kind of fastener, nails, screws, glue. Like a strict mortis and tennon thing.

But then again, by building code it's still illegal.

But, it's worth a shot.

Didn't bother to click the original poster's links, but you can't buy an English title and it's actually illegal for them to be traded, under the Prevention of Abuses of Honours Act. You CAN however buy a Scottish barony, but they're unsurprisingly very expensive.

The only way left to buy a title in the UK is to donate several million to your favourite political party, and await the turning of the democratic wheel for repayment. Life peerage, here we come! :D

You're not buying or trading a title though. You're buying a piece of a Royal estate which by Scottish law entitles you to become a Lord/Lady of that estate. In England it doesn't work like that but in Scotland it does and United Kingdom law as a whole recognises that Scottish law. I guess it would be classed a loophole, that's what you get when England, Scotland and United Kingdom laws don't match up.
It is however illegal to use your Lord/Lady titles to commit fraud, obviously.
