Tomorrow night the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing a live concert in Salford, presented by Mark Kermode, where they will be celebrating iconic movie music from throughout the years. The concert itself is sold out, but it can be heard live on BBC Radio 3 from 7.30pm - 10.00pm.

The programme runs as follows...

19.30 - Part 1
  • John Williams: Star Wars - Suite [Main Title, Princess Leia's Theme, The Imperial March]
  • Jonny Greenwood: There Will Be Blood - Suite
  • Bernard Herrmann*: Taxi Driver - A Night Piece
  • Erich Wolfgang Korngold: The Adventures of Robin Hood - Suite
20:10 - Interval Music
Mark Kermode presents recordings of classical music made famous by the movies.

20:30 - Part 2
  • Bernard Herrmann: Vertigo - Suite
  • Nino Rota: La Strada - Suite
  • Angelo Badalamenti: Blue Velvet (Main Title, Mysteries of Love)
  • Angelo Badalamenti: Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (Main Theme)
  • Danny Elfman: Batman - Suite
I must say, there's a few themes missing from that line-up that I reckon should have been included - John Williams' theme for Superman being one.

What's odd though, is that I found out about this concert from a news item on the BBC's North West Tonight, where Kermode and the musicians were talking about the Indiana Jones theme, and the theme from the Star Trek TNG movies, both of which are absent from the schedule. Also, Mark Kermode was talking about him playing a harmonica piece from Midnight Cowboy (his favourite score, apparently), but that also doesn't feature on the schedule.

Looks like those of us stuck listening to it on the radio aren't getting the full shebang. :(

Wonder if there's a podcast version with it all?

I heard it this evening. All good stuff. The whole performance is available on the iPlayer of course - it lasts just over 2 hours including interval.

However, the Midnight Cowboy theme, complete with Kermodian harmonica, didn't appear in the Radio 3 concert, but was performed during Mark Kermode's Radio 5 Live wittertainment slot in the afternoon which came live from Salford with the BBC Philharmonic (the audio of which is also available on iPlayer as well as the usual podcast). Word of mouth is that it moved some listeners to tears.

The wittertainment performance also opened with a performance of Jerry Goldsmith's Star Trek: TMP theme, and also featured the Raiders March, the theme of the Magnificent Seven, and Gabriel's Oboe, among some others which also appeared in the main concert. It was also interspersed with the usual film reviews, but they were very much secondary to the music this week.

Oh cool, so that should be available on iPlayer too then. Excellent. Cheers for the info, ZR. :techman:

Cool, going to have to check both out today then. Got a few of the Film Review podcasts to catch up on though. The round table where they discuss the music, one of the 10th anniversary specials and this weeks.

Here's the iPlayer link to the Radio 5 Live concert with added wittertainment:

The concert includes the music from There Will Be Blood, Taxi Driver, and Blue Velvet that appeared again in the Radio 3 concert; and also includes music from Star Trek, Midnight Cowboy, 2046, The Magnificient Seven, and The Godfather, as well as Gabriel's Oboe from The Mission, and the Raiders March.

Apparently highlights of this concert are going to be on the Red Button from Monday, so you may see Kermode's organ being blown in all its glory.

And here's the link to the Radio 3 concert:

EDIT: Mark's performance of the Midnight Cowboy theme is now online.
