I'm fully aware that this is mentioned in the poll thread, but as that thread was all about speculation, while this is the first actual official cancellation* in the franchise's 48-year history (through no one's fault, of course), it's worthy of its own separate discussion.

In response to a tabloid report that suggested the series would actually continue, the BBC has confirmed The Sarah Jane Adventures will end following the broadcast of the 6 final episodes that were produced before Lis Sladen died:

Of course this news is no surprise to anyone. I do feel sorry for the young cast members, though.

* According to many histories of Doctor Who, the series was never officially cancelled in 1989; the BBC simply didn't bother commissioning any more seasons.

I am glad they are doing this, recasting would have been horrible.

A spin off though I would be open to being made, the last season was the Rani and Clyde show pretty much, the two of them could carry their own show.

I've always laughed at that. You could just as easily say that NBC didn't cancel Star Trek; it simply chose not to commission any more episodes from Desilu in 1969. The logic is the same. :)

Something like Firefly, though, was canceled; FOX didn't even air all the episodes they commissioned.

I'm somewhat surprised it's only going to be the 6 episodes. i actually expected them to fill out the rest of the season with Sarah Jane off camera, and whatever method they used to accomplish that (IE: Another character sterpping into Sarah Jane's role or whatever), if it was well received, spin the show off in that direction, if not well received, leave it at just this season being completed.

I never thought Sarah Jane would be recast, but, I did think there was a possibility her character may be replaced by another.

Well I'm not totally surprised and I think its probably for the best.

I do hope we get to see more from Rani and Clyde however.

And not only that, they filmed the opener and finale stories in that block - meaning that whatever they wrote as an overarching plot for that series was most likely preserved and the unfilmed episodes were standalone stories. SJA was not known for complex plots over multiple episodes (especially last series, which had barely anything tying the stories together except the ABSENCE of Luke) but most years had some common threads that ran through the episodes.

I'm guessing that the last story was filmed with the other two because of the availability of some actors (namely Luke's), which in turn implies some continuity is in place. Doctor Who does this a lot - the first time I noted they did it in the new series was in the second year, where they filmed the Cybermen two parter and the finale episodes so various actors common to both storylines could be grouped together and filming in the same period instead of having them go off and come back months later. I suspect something like that happening, here, which I hope to be a good thing allowing a shortened final SJA series with no jarring discontinuities involved.

This is the best decesion, but I see they didnt rule out some form of spin-off, ok they didnt mention it, but they didnt rule it oult.

It is sad that happened.. but It is a fitting end to her role, and her namesake int he show's title. she will be sorely missed.
