BBC Considers Splitting Fifth 'Doctor Who' Season

Word is circulating that BBC could split Season 5 of "Doctor Who" into six-episode and seven-episode segments. The reason? To avoid competing against World Cup soccer, it's quite possible that half the season will air during the normal springtime season, but the rest could be a direct lead-in to the annual Christmas special, io9 reports

This would suck, but i can see why they would want to do this.

I can understand the logic here, if England do well in "World Cup soccer" and there is an England game on ITV opposite Doctor Who, then even Doctor Who would struggle to compete.

It would be a waste of a Doctor Who episode, all the money & hard work that goes into it, to put it up against an England game no question, BUT im sure there are World Cup games Doctor Who could compete with, im sure that any game that does not feature England, Doctor Who could rate better than.

Still I can understand it, and maybe it will give them time to make the final episodes even better.

More rumors that ultimately trace back to some guy on a message board. I don't see the BBC trying to "fix" something that isn't really broken, especially not by moving Doctor Who to autumn, where it would be up against The X Factor. In context "The Satan Pit" did perfectly fine against the World Cup game. If there turns out to be a serious scheduling problem, there are easier corrections than delaying half the series.

Although, to play devil's advocate, if the BBC were ever to consider moving the show to autumn, this would be how they'd play it: keep part of the series in spring, to get its typical strong ratings, and part in autumn to test the waters. If it succeeds there, great; if not, you've still got a strong spring performance to fall back on. I don't think that's at all likely, but the possibility's there.

Why not start the show in the opening weekend of March so the show would end just before the World Cup begins.

I think that this rumour started with someone on OG/DWF overhearing a discussion in an ITV scheduling meeting as a possibility the BBC might consider. I think it's far from certain - the big counterargument that an Autumn broadcast would put Who up against the X Factor, but it's something I personally wouldn't mind at all.

More than happy to have the wait to be able to watch Doctor Who in the darkened evening's again...

you have got to love a place that can start Doctor Who romours based on what ITV has said, whats next Corrie romours based on what the producer of Eastenders thinks the show should do.

Makes partial sense, but I thought the last series got some of its most highly rated episodes following on from Euro 2008 games?

Is there any particular reason the Beeb can't just schedule new episodes to avoid airing opposite the World Cup?

I dont know enough about football, but it would probaly lead to it being on & off random weeks, no one really knowing when its on, worse still the change of timeslot or day would confuse things too much.

I can understand the logic here, if England do well in "World Cup soccer" al

It's football, not soccer, FOOTBALL

No football is NFL, that is Soccer!:techman:
maybe that kind of attitude is why you guys have never won the football world cup?

and slightly off topic, why does Scotty a guy with a Scottish accent, saying Aluminium, in the US way and not the CORRECT English way in The Voyage Home, I only worked out what he was actually saying the other week.

It's the soccer equivalent to the World Series for baseball or to the Superbowl for American football. (They call soccer "football" in the rest of the world.) It involves teams from many different countries, since soccer is internationally popular.

ok that is WRONG.

edit: come to think of it, the FIFA World cup, is like the World Baseball Classic, but instead of playing baseball to decide the winner, they play football.

the MLB World Series and the Superbowl are club championships, like say the Premiership or the FA Cup, or even the UEFA Cup

the FIFA World Cup, is more like the Olympics in that its made up of teams from a country, and only people born in that country can play in that team, unlike Football, NFL & MLB (even the MLS) clubs where players can be from anywhere.

Fair enough, but the thing of it is, almost no one in America gives a shit about, for instance, the World Baseball Classic. The club championships like the World Series or Superbowl are popularly considered to be the pinnacle of achievement in those sports -- just as, if I understand things, winning the World Cup would be the pinnacle of achievement in football/soccer.

It may be wrong to people outside the US, but it is an analogy that makes it easy for Americans to understand.

And as far as us never winning a World Cup, has it occurred to you that most Americans don't really care if we win the World Cup?

no calling the World Cup the Superbowl of Football is not just wrong to people outside the US, its also wrong to anyone in America, facts dont change simply because someone is an American.

If an American, is to thick to understand the difference between the two, thats their look out not mine, all I can do is give the most accurate answer that I can.

The World Baseball Classic format is much more like the FIFA World Cup, than the World Series, Superbowl, Stanley Cup or whatever the hell the NBA play for, will ever be, it say that it this is not the case, is ignorance of the highest order.

what is wrong with you people?
