Wasn't expecting this news already, between this and the airdate for Doctor Who looks like Comic Con is getting all the big UK news.

Broadcast
Merlin, BBC1’s Saturday night fantasy drama, has been commissioned for a fifth series – before the fourth has even aired.

The new commission was announced as cast members Anthony Head, Braley James, Katie McGrath and Colin Morgan met fans at the Comic Con event in San Diego yesterday (Sunday).
The fourth series of the medieval drama is currently being filmed by Shine TV in France and Wales, for broadcast this autumn on BBC1.
The new 13 x 45-minute series will begin production in March 2012.

Well I expected it to be announced after the series had started, and that it would be the last. But I assume if that's the case it'll be announced when the BBC make it official.

Cool, I think Merlin's been getting better every series, and I'm anxiously awaiting S4.

Was there really a 5 year plan, or is that just a joke? Although I would miss it, a 5 year plan sounds good, let it go out on a high note before it becomes dragged out.

I've heard there's been a 5 year plan for a couple of years now. They're saying with the early commission it allows them to focus on the writing and do a proper long character arc.

If 5 is the final series/season, then I will certainly be very curious to see how the show will end.
