BBC Brand Strategy 2018-2022

Some key points:

"...a five year evergreen strategy"
"...grow youth audiences, engage families with young children, and deepen the property’s relationship with existing fans..."
"More than 11 hours of new content in Autumn 2018."

That last one's interesting as 1x60 and 9x50 only gives your 8.5 hours. Even throwing in the as-yet-unconfirmed Xmas Special falls well short.

The link came up with an error for me. :(

Anything else I'd reflect on based on the quotes might be in insufficient context (on top of my usual possibility of misinterpretation to begin with.)

Huh, I just checked and it still works for me.

The "11 hours" quote is a bullet point for a subsection cover.

Might simply be translating 11 episodes (to include the Christmas episode) to "11 hours."

Exactly my interpretation. They're producing content to fill 11 hour-long broadcast blocks. The shows themselves may not be an hour, but that's what a network should block out time for.

Just cut them down to a single episode every two years, BBC. You don't have to produce an actual full run for Doctor Who, anyway. Its only your flagship series with brand recognition unlike any other show you'll ever have., or had (with the solid exception of Sherlock).

Top Gear surpasses either Doctor Who or Sherlock in terms of brand recognition.

I'm just happy they're planning on making the series for everyone again rather the increasingly small group of fans Moffat was writing for over the past few years.

I've said it before, and I'll repeat myself -- there were times where I felt Moffat's goal was to win a fandom fight at the Tavern or win a threadwar on rec.arts.drwho. I realize that's not entirely fair to Moffat; the fans he was pitching the show toward weren't really the same fans who engaged in the Rad/Trad Wars of the late 90s on USENET or who could debate the minutiae of the Cartmel Masterplan in a pub in the early 90s.

And possibly Strictly as well.

I forgot about that! And if they hadn't let The Great British Bake-Off get away...

Actually given they lost GBBO and TG's slumped somewhat since Clarkson and co left you could argue Strictly is the BBC's top brand these days.

I don't know about any of the shows you're talking about. All I know, is that for a Greek fan, who grew up in Greece, Doctor Who was at least heard of since the late '90's. Its a show that has a legacy that transcends the country.

Did Steven Moffat kick your dog in the junk or something? I swear, since the moment he was announced to be taking over from Davies, your posting M.O. has been to bag on him and find any reason, no matter how miniscule, to criticize him.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, Moffat's definitely responsible for robbing us of more time with Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, and the drunken YOU ARE ERASED FROM DOCTOR WHO rant at Carol Skinner defies explanation, but it's not like the man is literally Satan or something.

Honestly, the worst thing I can say about Moffat's Who is that he wasn't nearly as good a showrunner as RTD was. But he was still a lot better than JNT and Saward/Cartmel.
