Looks like American fans of British Sci-Fi have something to look forward to. BBC America has picked up Survivors, Being Human and series 3 of Primeval.

BBC AMERICA ANNOUNCES THREE SCI FI DRAMAS - BEING HUMAN, SURVIVORS AND A NEW SEASON OF PRIMEVAL

BBC AMERICA today announced three highly anticipated sci-fi dramas: BBC AMERICA co-production Being Human and the acquisitions of Survivors and a new season of Primeval. All three shows will premiere later in 2009.

· Being Human (6 x 60), a Touchpaper Television and BBC AMERICA co-production for the BBC, distributed by RDF Rights, part of the RDF Media Group.

· Survivors (1 x 90, 5 x 60), a BBC production distributed by BBC Worldwide.

· Primeval (10 x 60), an Impossible Pictures production for ITV, distributed by BBC Worldwide.

Damn. BBC America isn't part of my basic cable package. I was hoping BEING HUMAN would end up on the Sci Fi Channel instead.

Oh well. I guess I'm waiting for the DVDs . . . .

Yay! More Primevil! I just got into the series recently and it's fun stuff.

It is! What are the other 2 about?

Survivors is a remake of a 1970s series created by Terry Nation (as in Daleks and Blake's 7), in which more than 90% of the world's population are wiped out by a viral epidemic, and the survivors have to, ahh, survive. Lead writer on the remake is Adrian Hodges, the lead writer on Primeval.

Being Human is a flatshare drama set in Bristol, the twist being that the three flatmates are a shy werewolf, an on-the-wagon vampire and the ghost whose presence meant the other two got the place for a very cheap rent. Lead writer is Toby Whithouse, who wrote the Doctor Who episode School Reunion (the 10th Doctor one with Sarah Jane, K-9 and Anthony Head

Weird how short their seasons are; I could watch a full 24-26 episode season of Primeval... a great, sleeper hit.

If the lead writer on that show is doing Survivors, then I'll give it a try too.

I think a good deal of that is due to the budgets. "Primevil" is a relatively expensive series to produce by ITV standards. If it were funded in the same way as US shows, I bet there could easily be 13-20+ ep seasons. I'm mildly curious how the show would do on prime time in the US instead of airing only on BBC America but I'm guessing the networks would find a way to foul it up.

Primeval is 10 episodes this year, up on 6 the first year and 7 the second.
The reasons series are so short here is as much to do with tradition and the way our TV schedules work, as to do with budget. A lot more work is done on location in a lot of instances, most series tend to be written by at most a small group of writers, not big writing teams like in the US. And a lot of actors don't want to be tied down to long runs of the same show either, and can get more varied work with short series.

A lot of foreign countries do shorter seasons for tv shows so England isn't alone in that aspect. Most asian countries tend to do very short (8-12) episode season for shows. Of course there are some exceptions with extremely long-running shows that air continously in an almost Soap Opera-esque never-ending thing.

I think it also allows them more financial flexibility should a show's popularity nosedive that they're then not tied into any lengthy contracts.

I thought Primeval was enjoyable, although I didn't like the changes done in S2 that much. I'm not sure about the ghost/werewolf show, but I'd definitely check out Survivors. I'm always willing to try anything that's post-apocalyptic type setting.

I preferred the way it changed in series 2, showed there are consequences to time travel, and made it a more on going story.

I've really enjoyed Being Human, at first I didn't like that they've made a shift in tone and cast since last years pilot, but now I'm hoping it gets a second series.

Cant wait for the next season of Primevil. Any thing can change at any time which gives great flexability to the writers. You can take characters out for a whole season and bring them back. Great idea. Of course this would fail completely on Prime time in the US. Way to much thinking involved for the general audience. Look what happened to Journeyman.

Survivors sounds like my cup of tea-anyone know when BBC America is going to start airing it?
