Battlefield:Earth

Okay, I just saw this movie, and I enjoyed it. My question to The Community is: How faar does this movie follow the series by L. Ron Hubbard? And isnt that series like 25 books or so. I've heard things, but my knowledge is limited. I'd appreciate others opinions of this movie, as compared to the books.

To my understanding (I've only ever seen the movie all the way through thanks to Rifftrax--This is just my opinion, but I think Battlefield Earth is one of the most dreadful films ever created) the film was suppose to be one of two parts that were meant to be a complete adaptation of the first book. I could be wrong there, but I think that's how it was explained to me once.

I would imagine that since Travolta is one of the earliest Scientology members out there and was actually a friend of Hubbard's that he would have gone for as faithful an adaption as he could. I don't know that for sure. I tried to read the book once and fell asleep in my recliner.

Battlefield Earth was only one book coming in over 1000 pages in paperback form.

The film wasn't loyal to the book at all, just using character names and the basic setting of the book.

The book would have been better off with a television miniseries treatment. I prefer to ignore the existence of the film.

I guess if you had to look at it that way, the movie consisted of about the first third or so of the book. And yes, it was a dreadful movie that would have been better off not being made at all.

I think the movie gets a bit more of a bad rap than it deserves. I mean, yeah, it's bad, even really bad, but I'm surprised how it headlines "worst film ever" lists. There's plenty of films far worse.

And, hell, John Travolta is hilarious in this thing.

I've never read the novel, because it is 1000 pages long and nothing about it really strikes me as interesting enough to carry me through a fifth of that.

I'd say that if you saw the movie... the book is half finished.... My only beef with the movie is the fact they should have shown every human or at least a 20 second montage of several implying all sat in the chair.... that part is the only thing missing from making this movie half way decent...

Don't you know? If you enjoyed it then you are a Scientologist!!!

Liked the book a lot. (Also loved the Mission Earth series for the most part). Movie was pretty cringe-worthy.

Awful movie, even worse because it was made in the modern age, not the 1950s.

I haven't watched this movie, but "worst movies" lists aren't usually comprised of what people think the absolutely worst movies are. Instead they tend to be comprised of big movies that bomb and get more press for bombing than anything else, otherwise there would be a bunch of obscure movies on the list no one's ever heard of before. So you'll get Batman & Robin, Showgirls and Battlefield Earth on there, but BloodRayne gets ignored.

Fair enough.

Batman & Robin actually does sort of deserve to be on those lists, though. That movie is dire... and I liked Batman Forever. I can't imagine how the normals feel about it.

This was truly one of the worst movies ever created, and possibly the worst I have ever seen. Having said that, its like movies- Dolemite comes to mind-so bad that it becomes funny...

The book on the other hand was a very good story. Very long, but not boring or tedious to read.

What I like from the Rifftax version is when Mike and the guys sometimes can't even think of something to say when Travolta is either laughing (that laugh will haunt you for years) or speaking. Sometimes they just laughed. I think Mike even went "Really...?" at one point.
