Battery recycling

I have been trying to determine whether I should recycle normal, alkaline batteries. Every FAQ I've seen online, plus the people at the local battery store, say that you should just throw them in the trash. This doesn't seem right to me. Maybe it's just the 'recycling fever' I seem to be catching, but shouldn't there be a way to recycle batteries like this as well?

I mean, if the recycling centers here won't take them, then I guess there's nothing I can do, but still... :vulcan:

Take them to your local Wal-mart photo lab and see if they will toss them into there OTUC recycling bin... We used to do that for people..

If you are in California, all batteries are considered hazardous waste and cannot be disposed of in the trash. They must be taken to a recycling center or hazardous waste facility.

Unfortunately, no Wal-Marts near here, although that reminds me - my own store's photo lab might do that. Will check.
